Kitchen Gear Advice Needed

So I'm pretty new to being gluten free and am trying to figure out how far to go with this. The rest of my family does not have a problem with gluten. I am now positive I do.

I'm not sure what to do about dishes and gluten foods. I was wondering what others do. Do you buy all new dishes for entire family and does everyone go gluten free? Do you have seperate dishes(such as plates), pots or do you share? Any advice is appreciated because although I'm pretty careful we're still using the same kitchen gear (other then the toaster). Oh, and what about grills is it okay to have you're food grilled on the same grill as a grill with say marinaded chicken?

Then of course there is food like jelly, peanut butter, regular butter etc that we share. I'm just not sure how to get it all in order. And what's overboard or just being safe.

I appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Welcome!

I am very lucky, it is just my husband and me and our kitchen is gluten free.

I think the general feeling is that as long as the dishes are cleaned well, then they should be OK.

Now, I threw out the toaster and the mixer and the wooden spoons and my wooden cutting boards. My calphalon cookware is not non-stick, so it is fine and I don't react to it. I did get new plastic containers, but we do this every couple of weeks anyway (he leaves them at work and they get moldy and we won't clean them if they are moldy)

If it is a gluten kitchen, then you will need to have your own containers of any condiment that might possibily come in contact with gluten. Butter, Peanut butter, mustard, mayo, jelly etc. etc. I would also recommend one area of the countertops that is designated Gluten free. We actually have the opposite-one small area where he puts any odd gluten item that might be in the house for a short time. We also use Paper towels, rather than sponges or dish towels to clean countertops at my parents house.

Next step-have you check personal products and pet foods? I will feed the animals if I have to, but make sure to wash my hands immediately.

I am sure others that do not have a gluten free kitchen will thing of some things for you too.

I just washed all my dishes/tupperware/pots/pans/cookware in HOT water. Any non-stick pots and pans that you have are ok to keep IF they don't have scratches. I have been using teh same things as I was before going gluten-free.

I second getting rid of the wooden stuff and anything you are questioning. I would also pick up a new colander!

As far as peanut butter and jelly....(make sure both are gluten-free) but instead of buying two seperate you could just put some into a tupperware container for youself!

Good Luck...it's tuff at first but gets easier!

I would get your own toaster and collander. I also got new kitchen utensils and pans for me.

Welcome to the forum, @Trish G! "Gluten free" does not necessarily equate to "no gluten". According to FDA standards it actually means that a food product contains no more than 20ppm of gluten. This is safe for most celiacs but would not be for those who are on the more sensitive end of the spectrum. So, it would depend on the individual celiac and their level of sensitivity to minor amounts of gluten. That's the long and nuanced answer. The short answer is that it is a product derived from wheat and so you can be certain it will contain some residual amounts of gluten. No gluten removal process is 100% effective. So, to be absolutely certain, stay away from it. Have you tried chia seeds? Very high in fiber and quickly turns into a gel when added to water. Make sure you get seeds that are gluten free if you decide to try it.

I was taking Benefiber for my IBS-C before my celiac diagnosis. It does say Gluten Free but lists Wheat Dextrin on the label. I really dont like psyllium fiber, so is there anything else I can take or is the Benefiber really ok for someone with Celiac disease?  Thanks!!!

Abdominal pain and an itchy stomach were the symptoms I asked to see a GI about. Now I’ve learned these other symptoms—that I have but attributed to other issues—could also be related to celiac disease:  fatigue joint pain canker sores numbness or tingling in hands or feet difficulty with coordination anemia headaches neutropenia I never dreamed in a million years she would consider celiac disease. It was a shock to me. It’s definitely not what I went to her for.

@Rejoicephd, I'm not a doctor, but I experienced severe thiamine deficiency.  Your symptoms seem really familiar.  Malabsorption is a real thing that happens with Celiac.  A multivitamin is not going to prevent nor correct nutritional deficiencies.    Doctors do not recognize nutritional deficiency symptoms.  Gastrointestinal Beriberi is not recognized often.  Caused by thiamine deficiency, high dose thiamine supplements or IV administration with other vitamins, minerals and glucose under doctor's care is needed.   Thiamine deficiency is found in anemia.  Thiamine deficiency in the kidneys can result in electrolyte imbalances and cloudy urine.  Thiamine deficiency can cause high blood sugar which can cause cloudy urine.  Dehydration can cause cloudy urine.   I'm linking some PubMed articles.  You see if your symptoms match.  Discuss the possibility of Gastrointestinal Beriberi with one of your specialists soon!  Just to rule it out.  I'm very concerned.   I'm linking some PubMed articles.  You see if your symptoms match.   Thiamine, gastrointestinal beriberi and acetylcholine signaling https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12014454/#ref3 From Section 3: "In conclusion, TD limited to the gastrointestinal system may be an overlooked and underdiagnosed cause of the increasingly common gastrointestinal disorders encountered in modern medical settings. Left unattended, it may progress to wet or dry beriberi, most often observed as Wernicke encephalopathy.". . And... Refeeding Syndrome https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK564513/

What are your symptoms? What has brought you to the point where you sought celiac disease testing?
