I'll join in, I would like to lose 20lbs or so. I used to weigh about 135...and now I am over 150 and I don't like the way I look. I want to get back down again. This sounds like a plan.

hey, guys, just checking in. I find Mondays the best day for me to check in. This week I did OK. I think I had too many carbs for a couple of days. DH made beans and they were so-o-o yummy I pigged on them! But I stayed off sugar which is my biggest problem.

Any way I maintaned my weight loss of 6 pounds down so I'm glad for that. How's everyone doing this week?

Hey good for you angel0251 - sugar is my problem too. Instead of 1 day at a time for me it is one minute at a time! It is so easy to eat too many TJoes cookies with tea! I find staying interested in what I am doing helps a little.

I'm very interested in participating in this thread but I see that it's almost 2 years old and no one has posted in almost a month. Am I too late or do we need to start a new thread?

I was a Celiac Gainer, meaning I gained 50 lbs over 5 years till I was properly diagnosed. The weight gain has stopped since being gluten-free but I really need to get the weight off.

Right now I am grain, dairy and sugar free and you would think the weight would be pouring off of me but the fat is being stubborn and staying put.

Would love to be part of a support group but as we all know, being a Celiac, each of our situations are different and conventional advise or support really doesn't work. I'm hoping to connect with a few of you on here and hopefully we can support each other.

Today: 183lbs.

Sorry, I'm one of the guilty ones who hasn't been posting. I have had a very busy month! My daughter's open house this Saturday will end the run of craziness. I have been continuing with my diet though and have lost 8 lbs. as of this morning.

I read about increasing dietary fat to combat overweight, insulin resistance and heart related conditions. Really turned my thinking on it's head. All this advice to go very low fat is apparently very harmful. Makes sense with all the heart problems I see around me and the meds seem to make everything worse.

I combined some of this information with what I learned from the Atkins plan and I've been doing well. The great thing about it is that increasing your intake of dietary fat really satisfies you. I was always hungry and now I can be satisfied. I'm off sugar and grains and have to keep my carb intake low. I'm not losing large amounts every week but this is relatively easy for me to follow and the weight continues to slowly fall. That's cool with me.

I'm eating a 3 egg omelette for breakfast, cooked in butter with onion and tomato and bacon or ham. For lunch I have whatever meat was leftover from dinner, maybe some salad or a vegetable but just a little. Dinner is meat and usually a vegetable with a fruit, usually pineapple. For snacks I have cheese or nuts. I drink tea sweetened with stevia.

This is the easiest to stick to plan I have been on. I really am not suffering to find the end of the diet like usual so I think I can stick to this long term.

Yes, high-fat is VERY important, and I ran across an article just the other day while researching diabetic information because my DH is pre-diabetic. If you will go to Open Original Shared Link there is an abstract for a study which was just completed which shows a very compelling connection between diet drinks and not only a significantly high risk of developing Type II Diabetes, but also of an increased waist circumference. Interestingly, these same risks WERE NOT seen in people who drank "regular" sodas.

This study looked at the results from a large number of people who participated in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) from 2000-2007. It also looked at 2 longitudinal cohort studies and adjusted for certain factors (demographics, lifestyle, etc.) which might have falsely skewed the data. The results speak for themselves. (If you want to read the entire Diet Soda/T2D Risk study, you can click on the "Full Text" icon in the right-hand column on the web page)

There is also some interesting research out there (6-7 large studies, including the Framingham Heart Study) which suggests that low cholesterol is NOT a good thing (it actually INCREASES a person's heart disease risk), the serum cholesterol number BY ITSELF means nothing (the Total Cholesterol/HDL Cholesterol Ratio and the LDL/HDL Ratios are MUCH more important), and that - for women, at least - the serum cholesterol number means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in terms of heart disease risk!

My guess is - and I am NOT a medical professional, so bear that in mind - we are all a lot healthier when we eliminate gluten from our diets, eat GOOD high fat foods, and eat REAL sugar (in moderation, of course!). My DH has been so frustrated these past few years because his glucose numbers keep creeping up while mine stay fairly low. He has been doing everything "right" - lowfat foods and diet drinks - while I have been eating and drinking all of the things that are supposedly "bad" for you. My weight is the only thing that has been a problem, but since going gluten-free, I have managed to lose quite a bit of weight (40 pounds in one year), and it keeps coming off slowly but steadily.

Hopefully the medical and nutritional professionals will start to sit up and take notice and realize that all of the things that we have been told over the past 20-30 years are just plain WRONG, and we will all be told that it is all right to start eating "the good stuff" again....... I know that I am a LOT happier since learning all of these things (especially the gluten-free stuff)!

I'd be very interested in participating in a weight-loss group! Should we revitalize this thread or start something new?

I've lost 63 pounds over the last year, most of it by following an anti-inflammatory diet (which worked really more like an elimination diet, and is the way I discovered I am gluten and lactose intolerant). I started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet a few weeks ago and have taken off a few more pounds with it. Something was still causing me to have puffiness in my hands and ankles, and the SCD has helped quite a bit. At any rate, I began my diet at a weight of 295, and this morning I weighed 232. My goal is 182.

Y'all make suggestions - how/who/what/why? Shall we report in every day? Shall we pose weekly challenges? Shall we have a weigh-in day each week? What about individual or group goals? This thread or a new one?

I'm all ears!

I"m interested too!! Should we start a new thread?

My weight has creeped up over the past 10 years about 15 lbs, and in the last 8 months I've put on another 10. I'm 188 now, with an ultimate goal of 157 (my weight when I had my high school sr. physical to go to college!). I turned into a stress eater, which I wasn't before. I have to deal with that before the weight can come off!!

If you newbies start a new thread, let us oldsters know and I'll follow you. I haven't been terribly punctual about posting so maybe those who are the most enthusiastic should make the choices. When I tried posting what I ate each day, that was a bit much. I couldn't keep up with it. For awhile we posted on Fridays but that's often a bad day for me and Monday was more manageable. Also Monday morning is usually my "skinny" morning so I like that!

What do you think about choosing your own personal best day to weigh in? That way if we all do different days, someone will be posting almost every day. I'm more inspired when I have something to read and react to every day. I really like everyone telling what works for them too. That advice got me on the losing tract this year.

I'll share that my goal is to lose weight but mostly I want to see improvement in my blood pressure. I'd like to get off those meds. Not to mention be brave enough to wear a bathing suit again.

Hey there:

I"m interested in participating with this thread, but I first wanted to ask just a basic question. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can increase my protein w/o eating meat. I am a vegetarian and prior to my diagnosis (which was very recent) I ate a lot of texturized vegetable protein (which is a no no) and faux meat products with gluten. I do eat dairy and eggs...but beyond that I"m at a loss.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed -- not sure how to eat ... I seem to be doing this carb fest every day and I want to joint this thread for some support as I try to reduce my carb intake (but being so new to celiac, I"m not sure what to eat besides carbs).

About me & my goal -- I"m a young professional. I"m used to eating on the go (usually a quick cheese sandwich from a deli and we all know that can't happen anymore!). I'm steadily gaining weight since my diagnosis so my primary goal is to stop the rapid weight gain I"m experiencing. Then I'd like to eventually lose 8 pounds (so long as I don't gain any more - lol)

TODAY:

Breakfast -

Home made shake with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, milk, grape juice

1 hard boiled egg

20 ounces of coffee

Mid-morning snack -

Corn bread

Lunch-

Glutino mini pizza

Mid day snack

Rice crackers with gluten-free peanut butter

1/2 cup cream cheese (2%)

2 sticks of celery with gluten-free peanut better

Supper-

1.5 plates of rice pasta with mixed sauteed vegetables.

evening snack -

bowl of flax / corn cereal with 1% milk and a handful of gluten-free cheesies

Have you tried protein powder? They maybe be of help

Hi, everyone, and welcome to a new week! We had my daughter's open house this weekend. Yea, all my holiday work and graduation obligations are finished and all came off well. I thought I had eaten way too many carbs yesterday but I have lost another pound. I am happy!! That brings my total to 10 pounds lost.

I'm looking forward to a great week. Most of the bills for the month are paid, for a change, and the end of the month isn't as stressful as usual. Hope you are all planning a fun Memorial Day.

I would like to join here. I am new here and to gluten free. I have ALOT to learn about gluten free and this forum searching around. Thru trial and error and talking with a neighbor who is on a gluten free diet, I found out the problem of my constipation & bloat I've had for 20 yrs and nothing helping - - We went on vacation (Florida) So I stopped & bought gluten free crackers, etc. to take with me for the trip - - and it was pretty easy to eat while gone because I was planning to eat just seafood while in Florida. Even found one restrauant that had a gluten free menu. . My bloated stomach went down and so did the pain within 3 days..... I came back home to the old rut with my husband who "loves gluten" - - and I am having a awful time. . Also all the gluten free cookies and crackers - - I gained weight - - plus getting off the diet back home with all the bloat, I've gained more ........ I really need all your help!!!!

I need to lose a good 20 lbs - I need to walk also. I have some health problems so if walking is all I do - I'll be doing good. Sweets is my problem - - I need to cut them out - - (So hard)

I'd love to see what everyone else is eating!!! Would someone mind sharing some daily menus with me??? I mean even Breakfast , lunch and dinner!!! I need HELP!!!! I'm having a terrible time . . . (What if you get tired of eggs for breakfast - - but you need to lose weight - - what do you have????) Thanks so much!!!!!

Sorry, Judy, I'm pretty boring in my menu. I eat the same breakfast every single day; tea, 3 scrambles eggs with onion and tomato.

For other meals we have been eating almost pure chicken as we are getting a deal on it and money is tight. I was complaining today I need to find some new ways to cook it. Since I've been dieting, I haven't been eating many carbs so I can't help you there. I can tell you that those foods made with the alternative grains do put the weight on me. A lot of them constipate me for a few days, a problem I've never had before. Right now I'm eating almost no grain and I have to confess, I'm feeling better than I ever have.

I usually eat meat and a vegetable for my other meals. I eat nuts as snacks and I have been having some squares of chocolate with the nuts lately. For sweetener, I changed over to stevia in place of sugar. It's really strong so if you use it, be cautious. I like grapes and cheese also for a snack.

I've lost 10 pounds and am holding there. I've settled into about 1/2 pound a week loss.

A corn wrap that's gluten-free would be fine. I'm just eating low carb so I'm not eating wraps right now.

Soy is fine as long as you tolerate it. I do great with soy. I drink soy milk every day. I switched to unsweetened now and I add stevia.

Whey is a by product of milk. You know like "Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet, eating her curds and whey." (cottage cheese) Maybe you can list the ingredients here and it can be looked over. Do you know if it's made in the US?

      Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.

      Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?

      Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?

      Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
