Glutened By Coffee?

I mixed coffee beans together, half decaf and half regular. Neither were "flavored" but I think I'm being glutened slowly by my cup of Joe. It's the only thing I changed last Thursday and am having symptoms. Off balance, brain fog, tired, back ache and I think the digestive issues will start soon.

Is plain coffee a problem? Someone told me I can not drink any decaf, is that true? I though plain coffee is always okay, but why do I feel so poorly.

I switched the brand on one, threw the bag away so don't know what brand or what it said on the bag.

If it says 100% Arabic coffee is it okay?????

I think that you should look elsewhere for the gluten.

How long have you been gluten free. It does take time to heal. Coffee should not be an issue, at least not a gluten issue.

I know some decaf coffee is decafeinated using chemicals, others use a more natural approach. You might be having a reaction to chemicals used to make the coffee decaf. A friend of mine reacts to the less expensive decaf coffee.

I always use Arabian coffee, I do always make sure that it is 100% coffee though. Flavored coffees can contain gluten, not usually regular coffee.

I buy beans at Whole Foods and mix them also half & half, as I am trying to get off caffeine (and I really miss it too!!). Whole Foods buys the raw beans and roasts them in the store, without any flavorings. So far it is going fine.

personally i have found that ive had to totally give up my coffee (which was a bind to start with!) i dont think it was to do with gluten itself, but just that my system (now ist all working) just couldnt handle the stuff... and then i was getting sysmptoms that were like being gluten'd... coffee is a natural laxative as well, so i just figured it was all to do with ...also it made me feel REALLY all anxious and nervous and skitty.... i cut it out and it went away... i can however have tea, so thats all fine.

I don't think gluten in the coffee is the problem. If anything, I'd say it could be the caffeine. I get really bad stomach pain and foggy head from caffeine - maybe you have a similar reaction?

Thanks all! It has helped.

I went out and bought some regular Starbucks coffee and it made a difference. I just need my cup of joe in the morning. I don't drink caffeine the rest of the day. I've had to give up so much, I hate the thought of giving up coffee too!

So now the question is does the decaf I bought have gluten in it? Or is it the processing that causes me trouble. I guess I will never know!

Thanks all!

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
