celiac disease, Anemia, And Bone Issues?

I had a follow up with my GI doc yesterday (scopes and dx were just last week) and he is concerned about my anemia and calcium/vitamin absorption...and he's also sending me for a bone density test. He told me to take THREE iron pills each day (I'm currently taking one/day) and to add Viactiv calcium chews as well.

Is this pretty standard? What supplements do you take?

Oh and he also said I'm undernourished and need to gain weight. Hey buddy, I just had my 3rd kid and am trying to LOSE weight

I wish I could help you, I came looking for answers myself. My 18yr old was diagnosed with celiac 2mos ago, not they are saying her red blood count is "dangerously low" and have scheduled us with a hematologist. I am freaking out!

I was diagnosed with celiac 5 years ago and have stayed totally on the diet. I also can't eat dairy. I am 51, just started menopause, and I just found out I already have osteoporosis. I eat a pretty healthy diet (I love chocolate), I take calcium and other kinds of supplements, and I exercise regularly but I still have osteoporosis. I think it was all the years of poor absorption before I was diagnosed. I wish I'd been tested earlier. You are kind of young for it but the bone density test sounds like a good idea, at least as a baseline.

I also take B complex, C, D (to help with the calcium), and Omega 3 oils. My gastro doctor sent me to a dietician after I was diagnosed; it was very helpful.

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
