Weight Watchers And Gluten Free

:o Hi

I started weight watchers in Jan. 04 and to the date I have lost 57 lbs. which was really hard for me since I was the cupcake queen. lol. I have learned to adjust to weight watchers (which I thought I would die the first month) but now I find out I have celiac sprue disease and have to be on this gluten free diet the rest of my life.

I'm thinking OH MY GOD what next. I have been reading these post where people are gaining weight and I'm thinking I want to cry. It took me so long to finally get this weight off and now I'm scared it will all come back.

I'm almost to the point of just giving up and going ahead and eating the way I use to. Someone please help me! I get so depressed when I go to the grocery store, I dont know what to buy, seems like EVERYTHING has at least one forbidden ingredient in it. WAAAAAAAAA.

If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry for being so negative but I think I had a really bad day. I also have that bloated belly. I can't seem to get rid of it. The doctor first thought I had IBS and put me on Zelnorm which I quit taking cause it made me sick. When will I start feeling better and when will my belly finally blow up?

Am I just imaging all this?

Thanks for listening.

terri ;) calm down--otay---weight watchers is probably the best diet to follow in all the diets you will ever find--you have lost 57# with weight watchers, you dont have to start eating differently, just eliminate the gluten--so much of the food out there is gluten-free, it just takes some detective work to find it all  ---i have been gluten-free for over 3 yrs now and i lost over 60# after going gluten-free just by the change in my eating habits ;) --i was a sandwich freak and toast and peanut butter was my staple--going gluten-free freaked me out until i realized i could still have my peanut butter--to this day i still crave bread and i have not found a gluten-free bread that comes close ;) ---i am not skinny to say the least, but when i started gluten-free over 3 yrs ago i was wearing a very tight size 26 jean  and now, i can sometimes wear 16's, but 18's are more comfy for me--as most celiacs will tell you, i cant stand tight fitting jeans--my tummy has always been too sensitive for that--i am only a size and 1/2 from my pre-marriage days, so i dont feel i will ever be skinny, but i feel so much better :D --if i could only get rid of the baby tummy from having 5 babies :P --so calm down and just watch what you eat as you have been doing--57# in 11 months is wonderful :D deb

I've only been gluten free for 3 weeks but I've lost 4 lbs and my stomach is so flat because I'm not bloated or gassy.

As with anything it depends on your food choices.. if you eat potato chips and candy all day you'll gain weight. In my case I'm eating less processed foods and its working. I feel so much healthier. Chicken, fish, pork, occasional steak, lots of veggies, fruit, I have made some gluten-free Pantry Spice cake but I've only been having a small slice once a day as a treat. So far so good.

I think once you look into it you'll see you can diet and be gluten-free.

I know how stressful it is. I have to travel at least 35 minutes, usually I go to the cities that are 2 1/2 hours away or 3 1/2 hours away because they are less expensive than the place 35 minutes from here.

I know a lot of times I say "screw it" and I eat something I shouldnt. Even when I know I'm gonna suffer. Because I'm only 20, I havent learned to not treat myself..So once a month I eat something I shouldnt..just to satisfy my cravings.

It will get easier, trust me :)

Oh, and not EVERYONE gains weight after going on the diet. I'm probably one of the few that have to eat extra fatty foods just to hold my weight, otherwise I would just keep dropping..

Hi,

This is celiac3270's mother posting...I have been on WW for many years. Congratulations on your weight loss! :D You may want to consider the Core Plan where you eat vegetables, eggs, lean meats (you probably know the plan) and you can eat as much as you want (until satisfied) and it's fresh and natural. If you are looking for WW frozen foods replacements you may want to look for Amy's frozen foods. You have to read the container because they are not all gluten free. They are very good and most of them are vegetarian (pretty low in points). Good luck to you.

Hi its miserable Terri again. Thank you for all your support. I think I was having a FEEL SORRY FOR ME DAY. I did alot of praying and soul searching and I gonna keep up my weight watchers and this gluten-free diet. I have a goal I want to reach and by gosh I'm gonna reach it. You guys are so great on here I look forward to here from you again. :) I have been on the core plan on ww so I think I'm going back to the point system, it seems to work better for me.

I also found a HAMBURGER BUN that I finally liked, (I thought I won the lottery)

so I think as days go by things will get alittle bit easier. Today I'm going to try to make a peach pie. I'll let you know how that turns out.

Also I don't know if anyone has ever tried this but I bought some gluten-free peanut butter cookies and Im going to crush them like graham crackers, make a crust like a grahm crax crust and make a peanut butter pie out of it. I hope it turns out cause thats my favorite for thanksgiving. :)

I am getting my chin up for know :D

darlindeb25 Collaborator
:D OK terri--keep that spirit going and i bet the peanut butter cookies will make a great pie crust--make sure you use a gluten-free peanut butter though and they are gluten-free cookies, right-----------and welcome liz and no--not everybody gains weight when they go gluten-free--i lost weight when i went gluten-free--over 60# and i was much more then chunky--one of my cutest stories is--the men need to not read this :P anyways, i had a group of friends, we had coffee or tea every morning and we would joke that 2 of us were members of the itty bitty titty club B) , me being one of them :( , but guess what--after losing weight, i found out, as my man calls them  , his ladies were just hiding in all that fat, they were overcome by the rest of me--i'm not so bad anymore ;) --i know they didnt grow, just came out of hiding--after going gluten-free i found bones i didnt know i had--like my collarbone--all along that area--my sister tells me i am more defined now  cute huh--anyways, there is hope and i didnt even really diet--it was all the sandwiches i couldnt have anymore--my staple was bread--i want to lose at least 30# more, but have been sitting on one of those plateaus  and also, you both need to remember--gluten-free is not a diet--it's your lifestyle, you cant go off of a lifestyle--weight watchers is the best diet there is and it has been around forever and has the satisfied customers to prove it--hehe, i was on weight watchers when i was 16  eons ago--deb :D
Guest talsop

Moring Deb, we must get on here at the same time lol. Yes they are gluten-free cookies. I have bought smuckers peanut butter from the safe food list but was wondering is Jiffy gluten-free?

darlindeb25 Collaborator
:D oh yeah--jif is gluten-free and the best peanut butter there is--if you have krogers where you are--the store brand is gluten-free and taste as close to jif as i have ever found--even my dad likes kroger brand and he is a diehard jif fan--you must be somewhere here in the east--where are you from--michigan here--deb :D

Indiana here. My peach pie was wonderful. The crust was alittle crumbley but it was still good.

darlindeb25 Collaborator
:D wonderful--i think it is a job to get the right considency with flour other then wheat <_< but well worth the effort for us---i made my man some gluten-free and low sugar chocalate chip cookies and sent them to him--they fell apart in shipment :( --he had to eat them with a spoon, but he loved them--hehe :D--my sister is very good about fixing recipes to make them delicious--she is always experimenting--but she uses too much flax seed for me--my body cant tolerate that much fiber, so i have to adjust her recipes for me ;) --------indiana--hehe, just south of the border :D ---i just figured out how to set the time in here so my post are sent when i send them ;) ----deb

Deep breath! Remember that a gluten-free diet is often easiest on natural, whole foods. These are nutritious as well, and since you're doing your own cooking (it doesn't have to take long or be hard at all), you control the calorie content of what you make. I find it far easier to keep my calories in control eating gluten-free.

I have Celiac and was on Weight Watchers. It was the only plan that let me adjust the food to my needs. It is a very good one for Celiacs that need to lose weight.

Guest talsop

Hi all, you can know call me betty crocker (I've been making so much for from scratch I'm scaring myself) :D I'm feeling pretty good about this diet now, it doesn't really seem so bad. Last night I had spagetti and it was actually good.

I think what has really helped me is 1. this forum 2.being on weight watchers since Jan., I learned to deal with eating right months before I was diagnose so I had bascially gotten rid of most junk food I used to eat. I have been doing alot of baking from scratch which takes alittle longer but well worth it.

I have found out that gluten-free is alot higher in calories and fat than the regular stuff so I dont get to eat as much.

I weigh in today so I'm hoping I lose some. I'm 38 , 5'9 and weigh 205. My goal is to get down to 160 before October 2005. I've only gained twice since starting in Jan.07 2004 which amazes me because I never thought I could do it. I want to thank everyone for their encouraging and great advice on here. I look forward to chatting more with you.

i have found out one thing about going to these health food stores, DONT listen to the employees when buying gluten-free products, they will try to sell you anything. For instance I bought some baking powder for $6 and the store employee told me this is the only place to buy it, then I went to our local grocery store and they had the same exact same for under $2. :o

I guess you live and learn.

god bless

Terri

Was there a group on yahoo or here that was WW only gluten free?

Need to get some weight off after stopping smoking.

Any ideas?

I have been doing WW since Jan of this year and haven't lost 2 weeks in a row until now. The last 2 weeks I've lost more than I did from Jan till dx. I first joined in Jan of 2006 and did great! Mainly because I didn't eat bread or noodles because they were high in points. This last time I joined, we (hubby and me) have been eating whole grain breads and whole wheat pasta (the worst things in the world for me). I haven't lost the weight like before either. Now that I'm not making myself sick and eating all the gluten, I'm losing again! Loving that once again WW is the best eating way of life for losing weight. And side note: WW was voted the #1 weight loss program in the US!

I've done WW in the past but not gluten-free.

I really hate the meeting parts right now.

Is there a site where i can go and see the program?

I know there were 'points' etc and they wanted you to join the program to make it work.

Any one know of a site i can use or if not

a site i can use on the internet to help me with a EASY fast calorie counter

think there was a sparks somehwere at one time.

hope there is someone who kiows the WW program as it is today that can help me get started.

thanks

I do it currently. It's called points plus program. If you go to weightwatchers.com you can get information on joining. You don't have to go to meetings per se. You can do it all online if you choose to. I personally find the meetings very helpful. You can also find a meeting in your area and you should be able to sit in on a meeting for free before you decide if you want to join or not.

Thanks so much for responding so fast

i have been to so many meetings and seeing a chiro now where i can get weighed so it's just to focus of the points plus program guide i guess. I was gluten-free for almost 6 years so that part i get just need some meal ideas as i'm not looking foward to this effort after just stopping smoking and the weight came on without increasing calories .............

will look up the web sit which i should have done before but there isn't a gluten-free ww menue is there?

mamabear272 Explorer

There are some gluten-free items listed in the foods. There are also a lot of community recipes (recipes that members post) and posts in the message boards. If you do a search of the entire site for "gluten free" you'll find a lot. Please let me know if you have any other questions and I can look up stuff for you.

during the gluten challenge I did not consume any wheat germ   the wheat germ is TOASTED - it's the only way it is sold now afiak doesn't matter I consume vast amounts of lectin containing foods PROPERLY prepared and have for well over a decade. They do not bother me in the least.    no anemia however the endo who ordered the celiac panel is the one who suggested the 2 week gluten challenge of eating at least 2 slices of bread per day or a serving of pasta- ALSO put me on a new drug at the same time (not a good idea)  I ate 4 slices because they were thin, or 2 English muffins, and just once some lasagna that someone else made since I stopped eating wheat pasta years ago. The English muffins caused some of the worst symptoms but that pc of lasagna almost killed me ( not literally but the pain was extreme) during those 12 days there were at least 3 times I considered going to Urgent Care.   This entire process was a waste of time TBH due to being on that new drug at the exact same time. it is impossible to tell if the drug I am taking for the possible renal calcium leak is working or not- given the dramatic response to the gluten challenge and resulting nausea (no vomiting) and eventually a loss of appetite and lower intake of foods so now I have a dangerously low potassium level   I don't have a simple case of celiac or no- I have an extremely complicated case with multiple variables I am seeing an endocrinologist for a problem with the calcium sensing glands - that system is very complicated and she has been unable to give me a firm diagnosis after many tests with confusing and often alarming results. She also appears to be inexperienced and unsure of herself. but I don't have the luxury of finding a new endo due to multiple issues of insurance, lack of drs in my area, money and transportation. so I'm stuck with her At least she hasn't given up    in any case I can assure you that lectins are not and never were the problem. I know they are a favorite villain in some circles to point to, but I have ZERO symptoms from my NORMAL diet which DOES NOT contain gluten. The longer I went without bread or foods with wheat like raisin bran cereal, the better I have felt. my body had been telling me for several years that wheat was the problem- or maybe specifically gluten, that remains to be seen- and stopping eating it was the best thing I could have done   I almost had unnecessary MAJOR SURGERY due to joint pain that I ONLY have if I am eating bread or related products I assumed it was the refined grains - never really suspected gluten but it does not matter I won't put that poison in my body ever again not that it is literally poison but it is def toxic to me

@catnapt,  I'm sorry you're having such a rough time.   How much wheat germ and how much gluten were you eating? Lectins in beans can be broken down by pressure cooking them.  Do you pressure cook your beans?  Were you pressure cooking your wheat germ? What drugs are you taking?  Some immunosuppressive drugs affect IgA production.  Do you have anemia?
    • catnapt
oops my gluten challenge was only 12 days It started Jan 21s and ended Feb 1st   worst 12 days of my life   Does not help that I also started on a thiazide-like drug for rule in/out renal calcium leak at the exact same time No clue if that could have been symptoms worse 🤔

Welcome to the forum @Known1, What reaction were you expecting? Pipingrock.com High Potency Vitamin D3, 2000 IU, 250 Quick Release Softgels $6.89 I've have been taking the 10,000 IU for close to 10 years. When I started with vitamin D I worked my way up to 10000 over several weeks.  Even at 8000 I felt no noticeable difference.  Then after a few days at 10000 it hit Whoa, sunshine in a bottle.  celiac disease causes malabsorption of dietary D and you've poor UV access.  It took me from 2015 to 2019 to get my 25(OH)D just to 47 ng/ml.  Another two years to get to 80.  70 to 100 ng/ml seems to be the body's natural upper homeostasis  based on lifeguard studies.  Dr. Holick has observed the average lifeguard population usually has a vitamin D 3 level of around 100 ng/ml. Could it be that our normal range is too low given the fact that ¾ or more of the American population is vitamin D deficient? Your Calcium will increase with the vitamin D so don't supplement calcium unless you really need it.  Monitor with PTH  and 25(OH)D tests. Because of your Marsh 3 damage you need to ingest way more than the RDA of any supplement to undo your specific deficiencies. I believe you are in the goiter belt.  Unless you have reason not to, I recommend pipingrock's Liquid Iodine for price and quality.  The RDA is 150 to 1100 mcg.  In Japan the safe upper level is set at 3000 mcg.  Start with one drop 50 mcg to test for adverse response and build up.  I found 600 mcg (12 drops) a day is helping repair my body.  Iodine is necessary to healing.  90% of daily iodine intake is excreted in urine.  A Urine Iodine Concentration (UIC) can tell how much Iodine you got that day.  The thyroid TSH test will not show iodine deficiency unless it is really bad.

I don't know if I am getting sufficient Omega Threes. I read about  phosphotidyl choline may cause heart issues. I will have o do further research on heathy Omega 3 supplements or from foods. Is there a blood test that can tell you everything level in your system such as Thiamine, Benfotiamine levels etc? Thanks
