WARNING ..RANT COMING...

I was just sent this from list serv. It's just a part of a long rant from Martha Stewarts daughter alexis's radio show- I will not print the rest of the text B/C IMO the rest of the text is in such poor taste.

This part about celiac is bad enough--

We are always hoping to have some publicity for celiac so people can learn....we do not need her negative thoughts on it. How would she like it if someone pointed out her infertility problems...it's personal and in my opinion so is celiac. After the initial diagnosis, lets face it, the next few weeks months (transitional phase) is very emotional.....I am sending an email tomorrow!!!!!

There wasn't a possibility to listen to it in the archives, at least I didn't find it. But there's a bulletin board and I just gave gluten into the search. Maybe somebody already officially ranted on there. If so, I'm joining and if not, I'm becoming a member (it's for free, just like on here) and will rant officially. You can join me, if you want. I'm using the same name, then on here...

Good morning..

ok took it down myself. I thought about some the stuff they wrote about and just not comfortable in leaving it up....esp the paragraphs about the special..'cookies' and the dinning out experience one observed...

the only reason i put it up was to show what dolt's they were and hopefully those who listen to them 'are of like minds' and won't give our 'serious medical diet' more press of this kind.

one of my friends on Daily Strength wrote a powerful letter to Ms Stewart..telling of her personal struggle with celiac and related cancer. I'm asking if i can post here. It was an amazing, intelligent letter..

write a note if you can find a few seconds..

I read it, and it reads like a bunch of airheaded attention seekers. gluten-free is a hot,hot subject right now, so they are just trying to be au courant! Sounds like she didn't inherit Martha's smarts.

I may be missing something, but I just spent a great deal of time skimming through your posts. I saw one reference to a study I had previously seen. It says that the stool tests gave positive results for folks who weren't officially celiac. Well, that really begs the question doesn't it? Dr. Fine doesn't claim that any of his tests diagnose celiac disease. What I didn't see in your previous posts is how positive stool tests are for "perfectly healthy people." They are just people who are not diagnosable in the traditional way as celiac. If one accepts that gluten can be causing problems before damaged villi can be seen or can cause problems other than to villi -- in other words, things that mean folks are NOT perfectly healthy but are not celiac -- then the study means very little.

Is it your position that if someone cannot be diagnosed as celiac then by definition they do not have a problem with gluten and are "perfectly healthy?"

You say: "To some extent, almost everyone can test positive for stool antibodies to anything at some point. When we eat foreign substances (food) we create antibodies that often show up in stool." This is the first time I've seen this. Please elaborate. I have tried researching on Pub Med BTW ... the only thing I've ever found is the study already discussed.

I agree I would like to see this stuff get peer reviewed and published. Unfortunately in the real world one must sometimes act on less than perfect information.

From what I can tell, there are far more wasted resources from doctors not running all the necessary blood tests, taking enough biopsies, running these tests after gluten-free diets have been followed (and so are invalid), refusing to do celiac testing, etc.

Ummm...who are these idiots, and who is dumb enough to listen to them? Sad, sad, sad...I think my IQ dropped 50 points just reading this.

P.S. This is why I am scared. If people think I am "lying" about my "gluten allergy" (Celiac) when I go to restaurants or think I am on a "fad diet", my health and life is at risk. It's really terrifying. If the gluten-free diet is seen as a massive fad diet, it is not good for any of us.

Well stated, Doll.......I was at a dinner meeting last week.......asked the manager if they could do gluten-free for me...he said yes......but my server told me he used to have a problem with wheat, and understood what I needed......said he'd "take care of me".....and I swear I think I got invisible gluten somewhere that night at a low level. Belly cramping,bloating within 1 hour of leaving the place. Hope it wasn't intentional, but it's easy to get paranoid about it at times,especially when he said it didn't bother him anymore. I'm having the muscle cramps and twitchy legs 4+ since then...I won't go back there for sure.

We are NOT a fad diet!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been saying this all along on this forum when people say...any attention to celiac disease is good.

I didn't and still don't agree with that.

What I do agree with is ...THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE...and when we see something like this sailing out there on the cyber space..I FEEL IT'S UP TO US TO try to respond to these 'air heads' (thanks gluten-free MEMPHIS) let them know that we will be responding to their stupidity. plus, the whole rest of the talk show was 'trash' talk in my opinion. Will leave it up tonight but probably erase tomorrow as some of it is abhorrent IMO. Don't want to give them free space on here but rather to show just how really stupid the women are.

And odd they should mention cilantro. A waitress at a restaurant where I used to dine has a life threatening allergy to it. Alas, we can't eat there any more now that they changed the menu.

An interesting note on that latest NYT article on gluten that had her in such a tizzy--it ended up in my mailbox! :D My neighbor, who knows I have Celiac, read it, cut it out, and left it for me. There was a nice note with it--so thoughtful.

Articles like this really get my dander up--the gluten-free diet is the only treatment for our disease. It needs to be taken seriously by people who write for the public. It's just irresponsible to treat it as a fad, or begruge us the occasional, accurate press that we do get. If they don't get it, then they should educate themselves--I guess that's too much to expect.

Ms Stewart,

It has come to my attention through a friend, that you have a negative attitude about people with Celiac disease and the need for a gluten free diet and gluten free restaurants.

Well, I must tell you....you need to read up quite a bit on the subject.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease June of 2006 at the same time I was diagnosed with Lymphoma stage 4 that was caused from the Celiac Disease. I had been ill for a long time.....the final testing is when all of this was discovered. Thankfully--I am in remission from the cancer after undergoing 10 months of chemo. I just turned 60 years old this year, my doctors believe that I had Celiac ever since childhood and was misdiagnosed all these years. Had I known, I certainly would have been following the gluten free diet and would welcome restaurants where I could safely dine.

Did you know that 1 out of every 133 people have Celiac Disease and do not know it?

Lord, knows we want to eat too. Those of us with Celiac Disease also develop other intolerances, i.e. soy, dairy, nuts. I also have Chron's disease...so I am limited with foods for this disease, and now my doctors are testing me for Oxalate intolerance!!!!! Gee, it would be so nice to have articles/recipes in magazines and newspapers to help others who may be experiencing food related problems.

We, in the Celiac community have been begging our Senators and Congressmen to pass a bill to help educate everyone in the medical field from doctors to insurance companies about this Disease.

It would be helpful if celebrities, as yourself and your mother, would educate yourselves and climb on board with us to educate the world. This disease, if left unattended, can cause cancer and other serious related problems. I know it happened to me!

If any one listened back to the show which is repeated at 11 at night, was also discussed again today in length . . . Alexis did not bash gluten free diets. In fact she pretty much eats a gluten free diet. She was simply bashing people who LIE about having an allergy in order to avoid food the simply don't like. So, if you think about it, she actually OUTED the very people who make light of someone who actually SUFFERS from a forced restricted food diet.

Also, she's not just Martha Stewart's daughter, her mom has nothing to do with what she (Alexis) thinks or says. If she's important enough to discuss, then discuss her by name. It's only polite.

I was also wondering what message board they meant. The one on their website or ours??? If they meant ours, then it's not just posted on "some message board", like they said. It's absolutely posted on THE correct message board. What the??? <_<

And I can't get rid of the feeling, that they just make these statements to save their reputation. They are not really interested in us?!? How can so many celiacs misread the test of a show. I don't get it!!!

      @catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten.       I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

      good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.

      I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.
