Liver Disease And Celiac?

Has there been a connection made between diseases of the liver (i.e cirhosis) or the presence of tumors/cancers in the livers and having celiac?

I had fluctuating liver function tests. An ultrasound indicated cirrhosis. As a screening the GI ordered a lot of tests including one for celiac. I had not had significant GI symptoms typical of celiac prior to this. I am suspicious of some upset stomach episodes in hindsight.

That's one data point of a GI who thinks celiac with liver problems.

Note: The liver tests have returned to normal on a gluten-free diet.

I have a couple people in my life who are now dealing with serious liver issues, last stage cirhosis and cancerous tumors in the liver. It breaks my heart if something as simple as eliminating gluten from the diet could have been a preventitive measure, or something that could have been reversed, in these two cases.

That's great news your liver tests have returned to normal with the diet.

Thanks for the info.

Yes there is a connection to an auto-immune form of cirrhosis and celiac disease.

It breaks my heart too. I lost my twin at 15 due to autoimmune liver destruction. Our whole family could have been poster children for celiac but no one ever even checked. My liver enzymes were always elevated before diagnosis, but I was a closet drinker according to my doctors and just lied about it, yea right. My enzymes are now at normal levels.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
