Eat N Park has some basics....nothing very exciting. A few omelets, grilled chicken, chicken and portobella salad, some fish. My friends and I liked to go there for coffe, studying, late-night snacks....and we still do occasionally. Not a great selection, but it's nice to have a few safe options instead of just watching them eat. I've been there twice since going gluten-free, and they haven't glutened me yet.

Thanks for the info, I will remember that next time I am feeling the diner temptation come on.

The have a website--www.gluuteny.com. Check it out before you trek out there and save yourself a trip! :)

Thanks, but I go to school in East Liberty. I only have to detour a block over to Murray instead of Shady...

I drove by today and it says they'll open Sat at 2:00 "for real this time". On Murray Ave, on THE BIGGEST Jewish fast day, the bakery opens. What a way to wow the neighbors! (Website has the same info)

I'll be out of town, but the rest of yinz can check it out for me and report....

I actually called them up and told them this--they had no idea. They didn't want to reschedule, as they have had to push the date back so many times already. I suggested that they at least put up a sign saying they would stay open late that Saturday so that the locals can stop by after break-the-fast.

If I was the only one who notified them, they may think that I'm just a crazy lunatic. Perhaps others could call them up too?

Did anyone else besides me make it t Gluuteny's opening? I loved the cinnamon pound cake. I must admit I was a bit disappointed but I will buy the pound cake....

I love the idea that somethng is available with gluten-free people who don't bake or need a bakery item quickly....

I was out of town over the weekend and they're closed on Monday. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon to check it out. Their prices seem a little high but not too bad for gluten-free.

zansu Rookie

I had a chocolate cupcake! It was wonderful. I also got a loaf of the cinnamon poundcake. I was afraid to try any other samples.

couldnt make it to the opening day :(

but got there tuesday night :)

i got a choclate chip cookie and couple of cupcakes.

they were sold out of most everything which was blah...

i kinda want to have the bagels and the bread so will preorder it.

the price for the loaf of bread was quite reasonable in my opinion, it was less than whole foods and its fresh baked :)

i want them to make pizza for the busy days, it would be nice to go there the day befor thanxgiving and be able to buy a slice of gluten free pizza.... maybe four slices actually or the whole pie...

getting hungry now... go check it out if you havent already.

peace,

jdog

There is a store in Indiana , Pa that carries alot of gluten-free products also.

mamaw

The store is BTN - or Back To Nature. It is a nice store, however the food prices are very high - at least 15% or more compared to most other places. If you go there try and go on Friday afternoon as most of their stock comes in late Thursday and they don't get it stocked until after 11:00 am the next day. If you end up buying a case they will give you an extra 10% off. They do have monthly sales, and they put out a monthly flyer for the sale too. The people are very nice and helpful...but again they are a bit higher priced than usual.

So sorry about the double post....

I went to Gluuteny today--and they were closed!!!!

There was a sign in the window saying, "Closed due to power upgrade." Maybe they blew a fuse?

I would suggest calling before going to make sure that they are open! (I should have done that...)

Soergel's farm market in Wexford (on Brandt School Road just off the Wexford Exit of I-79) carries an ever-expanding line of gluten-free products, including Kinnikinnick bagels, hot dog buns, cookies, gluten-free pantry mixes, and Glutino cookies and crackers. They even have a canned spaghetti that looks similar to Chef Boy-ar-dee! They also have a request form hanging right above the gluten-free shelves.

Power upgrade? You think that would have been worked out before they opened...I guess you never know.

I made it gluuteny yesterday and got the chocolate chip cookies. I thought they were fantastic - in taste and texture, as did my boyfriend (who's not gluten-free). I talked to the woman who was baking (owner, I'm guessing) and suggested offering breadcrumbs, and maybe some pre-cubed bread for stuffing....helpful for the upcoming holidays! Everyone I spoke to was very nice, and seemed interested in suggestions.

Also, they said they sell out of the sandwhich buns the fastest. I went late in the day, around 7:00, and they said they had just sold the last loaf of bread 20 minutes earlier.

they told me if you call ahead, they'll put them aside for you :)

Yes, Gluuteny is open. They are quite wonderful. The owners and the employees are sweet and so is everything they sell. I can barely get from the bakery home without my kids consuming a cupcake, a cookie, blueberry muffin, cinnimon coffee cake and an entire loaf of freshly baked bread. The location is perfect, Squirrel Hill/Murray ave, plenty of parking nearby, their hours are quite liberal. The first day they opened for just two hours and sold out of everything. Though they felt a bit of embarrassment, I think they got over it and now that people can come just about any time (except Mondays, I believe), there's always plenty. I tried the apple pie this week and it was gone in two days.

The prices are better than most of what I've seen in the gluten-free/CF arena, still more than wheat based, but the variety is excellent and beside, it keeps us from over-consuming sweets (at least in theory).

The greatest thing is that I can take my family there and they know they can have "anything" they want, though they generally want everything!

This really puts Pittsburgh on the gluten-free/CF map and really, anyone coming to Pittsburgh, needs to stop by and grab what they can. .... Now if we could just a get a cafe next door....

hello--

Did anyone on here make it to the seminar on Saturday , Oct20th?

I thought they had a nice selection of vendors & the event was overall very good. I'm sure it was a big help to newbies.

Against the Grain Gourmet from Vermont was there selling & sampling. Great products!!!! They will be now carried at Health Hut in Beaver & Chippewa. Whole Foods will be adding their products soon. SunnyBridge also will be getting the line. They carry pizza shells, rolls, & baguettes more to come at a later date.

Lori of " Lori Bakes" will soon be opening her cafe/bakery in McDonald, Pa. It appears Pittsburgh is getting some gluten-free choices. Gluuteny was also there with their goodies, as well as Alivira with a nice sampling of yummies.

Trader Joe's had gluten-free sampling as well. Sunnybridge , dewalt's & Health Hut were represented also..

I enjoyed the day & thank all who helped make this possible.......snacks to take home & goodies to enjoy while there, very nice.

I was wondering if anyone has any insight on Gluten free catering? Whether it be a party of 50 or individual prepared meals in the Pittsburgh area. Does anyone think they would take advantage of it if it was offered and Gluten free.

I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.

Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks
    • knitty kitty
Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.
