Cold, Joint Pain, Fatigue

HELP - My son was formerly very hot....now is cold all the time....

also has fatigue - School thinks he is depressed - he says no just tired....

also has joint pain in the ankle - sprained it a while ago - but should be healed by now.

He is very good (extremely) about his diet. I do not think he got into some gluten - do any of your kids have ongoing symptoms?

Maybe you should mention these to the doctor, there could be something else going on besides Celiac.

Fatigue and joint pain is a common symptom for many problems including Celiac, and it should be checked out.

My son first presented with very rheumatic joints (hands, wrists, ankles, feet,) and those symptoms have subsided on a thoroughly gluten-free diet -- but rheumatoid arthritis is one of those autoimmune diseases that are not uncommon in celiacs. If you have faith in your pediatrician, you might ask. If you are near a big hospital they should have a pediatric rheumatologist. There are some blood tests they can do to check and those are fairly definitive. My son was the first JRA patient his peds group had seen in years (they actually used him as a teaching patient for the younger doctors -- here this is what it looks like in kids).

He also might be anemic. I also have Reynaud's, which sounds scary but it's just a fancy name and there's no actual treatment. I think, however it is fairly uncommon in children. Another possibility might be that his thyroid levels are off (sorry, another blood test....). I don't think you are misguided in wanting to not wait and see what's up, or wait for it to go away. 11 year old boys should not be chronically tired....

thank you stacie--i went to webmd and checked out the raynauds site--i have had this for years, usually effecting just one finger at a time--my hands and feet do get very cold--i work in a convience store and when i fill the pop/soda cooler i have to wear gloves to keep my fingers warm--thanks for the link--deb

The first thing that came to my mind was hypothyroid. How is he doing now?
