Literally Sick For 1.5 Months!

I have been ill for the past month with one thing or another. First SEVERE bronchitis, then SEVERE sinus infection, now I have strep throat. All of which have lasted so long that they have run into each other! My dd started school in August and I am guessing that I am getting these from her (though other than Strep, she hasent been ill). I am so frustrated. I know that I am not healthy. I feel weak and wonder if I have leaky gut. I have loose stools daily (I think I am eating gluten-free). I am considering a liquid diet until I can be sure that I am not ingesting anything I am not supposed to.

Any advise??? I do take a daily vitamin and a chewable B12. I do need to up this I think as I get numbness and tingling in my hands just talking on the phone (plus all night long).

Thank you for responding!

Shannon

I'll give a try to answer your concerns. I am sorry you have been sick! I take Airborne anytime something is going around the schools. I can't answer about leaky gut because I have never had it. You say you think you have been eating gluten-free. Do you have celiac disease/gluten intolerance? If so you need to be strictly gluten-free. Make sure your vitamins are gluten-free, many are not. When I have D I stick to the BRATY diet-bananas, rice, applesauce, toast (gluten-free) and yogurt. As you feel better, stick to whole, unprocessed foods-meats, veggies, fruit, rice.

What are you eating? Maybe we can figure out what may be the problem for you.

I would urge you to consider eliminating dairy from your diet. My family used to get all sorts of sinus infections, strep, you name it. Several times each year per family member it seemed. End of dairy ... end of problem. You can research for yourself the link many have found between dairy and such infections and decide for yourself. My kids (well, one is in college, one in grad school -- I guess I shouldn't call them that) still have dairy occasionally, but then notice that their noses get runny and avoid dairy completely until they are feeling better. (Then they repeat the cycle ... sigh  )

Also, were you given antibiotics at any point? If so, did you replenish the healthy bacteria with probiotics?

If you think you have an intolerance in addition to gluten, keep a food diary and see if you can find any links to how you feel. What is a typical day's diet? (And do check your vitamins -- if they don't specifically SAY gluten-free, you need to contact the manufacturer to be sure.)

By "liquid diet," what do you mean? I don't know that liquids necessarily mean you won't get something you shouldn't be getting.

You could do an elimination diet. Begin with a week of eating only those foods that few react to. (If you continue to feel bad, then something else would seem to be going on.) Assuming you then feel fine, add foods one at a time and note any reaction. There are probably different versions of elimination diets available online. The one I know of is at:

yes i too have to wonder--you are a celiac right? how long have you been going gluten free?

all i know is my guts have felt like runny paint that you just can't stop from sliding down everywhere!! for 6 months, which is when i started the diet--i have went up and down; gotten sticky and then started leeeaaking again...i now consider myself gluten free for a month since i realized that for 3 months of those 6 i was consuming gluten when i though i was not. i have started over.

strep and all the sinus infection could be a sign of oncoming thrush. is your tongue white? do you get any rashes anywhere? i agree with the probiotics. and you need to cut out all sugars, carbs, anything with yeast. i eat meats and veggies and am currently experimenting new seasonings here and there. i am so leery of everything. if i could just get a day where nothign bothers, if i could just move forward with this...i really can't afford one more gluten attack!! i could possibly melt where i stand the way everything is going through. might be why your hands tingle--poor circulation attributed to the dead villi and lack of nutrients absorbing

I feel for you. I was very, very sick for a whole year before I finally had my tonsils out. During that year I had Tonsillitis and Pharyngitis about 4 times, with colds in between. I also got a bad butterfly rash on the sides of my nose and cracks in the corners of my mouth. Then, after the year was up, I got my Tonsils and Adenoids out. I thought this would make me better, but after having those removed I began to have severe problems with my mouth. This has been going on for 2+ years. There is nothing in my mouth, but my tongue is very irritated constantly. I've been told that all of this is due to celiac. Despite the fact that I don't get sick with tonsillitis anymore, I was still dealing with constant mouth pain and stomach problems. It was brought to my attention that I perhaps I have Celiac. I went gluten free. The stomach problems left me. But now, like you, there is still something in my diet where my mouth problems do not go away.

I'm in this with you. I am trying everything. I currently just gave up Dairy, soy and most sugar as well. I'm going to see if this works. Let me know ifyou find something that works....

Or if anyone else has advice for us!

This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

Interestingly, this thought occurred to me last night. I did find that there are studies investigating whether vitamin D deficiency can actually trigger celiac disease.  Source: National Institutes of Health https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7231074/

Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.

I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not as common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
