Random....i Know!

So I know that a church really isn't a restaurant. Just didn't know what category this fit into. Are there any Catholics out there? What do you do about communion? I don't go to church regularly, but when I do, I just don't go to communion....then I look like a sinner! (Which we all are, I know, but no need in drawing attention to it!) Ha Ha! Just looking for some insight!

It's actually not random at all, it's something that has been brought up here before. After all, the same percentage of Catholics are Celiac as any other group! :)

I'd say there are 3 options...

1- Take communion on special occasions or once in awhile, knowing full well it's going to make you sick.

2- Order the "low-gluten" wafers that are available online, and take those. They may still make you sick, and they will still add to the damage your intestine suffers.

3- Don't take communion.

:( The sad thing is that there simply is no good answer! My Mom wants to try the low-gluten wafers, but as sensitive as she is, I know that even they will make her really sick. My 6-year-old is taking Faith Formation classes right now, and what I've pretty much decided for him is, I'll let him do first communion, preferably with a low-gluten wafer, and then not anymore-- at least until he is older and can make a better informed decision for himself.

As far as I could tell, most Catholics here on the forum don't do it. I'd love to hear from everyone, too though.

My daughter goes to a Catholic school. They have a chalice just for non-wafer receiving folks that isn't contaminated with the crumbs.

She was DXd after her 1st communion, but had she not been, I would have let her use the low-gluten wafer for 1st communion and then let her decide as an adult if she wanted to continue to do that.

If your church can provide an uncontaminated chalice so you can receive the wine it is considered the full sacrament if you are unable to receive the host.

It's the same at my church. We are told just to drink the wine. Years ago, there was only communion, and no wine. At least we are able to receive one. Janet

that's what i'm doing. just the wine, but the priest can always give you a blessing as well; which i believe God will sort it out i'm told

All very good answers. As far as the wine goes, I don't know....I just have a problem drinking after that many people! I think it's my medical background...ha ha ha. I just see germs everywhere! I did see where EnerG foods makes some Gluten free communion wafers, but then it says they are not recognized by the church. Anyway, I'm like you guys....surely God will understand. Besides, if I don't get into heaven over a communion wafer, I was probably not on the list anyway.

Your response on this matter is what I expect. You’ve had a similar episode years ago, but this one is lasting longer!

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?
