15 Month Old Diagnosed Milk Allergy And Soya Intolerent!

I will try and keep this brief! lol Sorry if tmi!

My son has had problems since birth with his nappies runny, watery, containing blood, mucous, sometimes being green/yellow, some absolutely stink! Also with a rumbling tummy, wind, colic and reflux. (The colic and reflux did sort themselves out around 6 months?

He was breastfed from birth with the occasional bottle of Aptamil thrown in just to keep him used to a bottle if the need ever arised. (later changed to SMA White and then Progress). He fed almost every half an hour for what seems forever, night times didn't change the frequency, he hardly ever slept and spent most of the early weeks and months awake.

I spoke with my GP and Health Visitor several times as I was concerned about the blood etc but was told that as long as he was thriving there was no problem. I asked the question about allergies/intolerances but was just fobbed off.

When my son was approx 12 months old I tried him on whole cows milk which resulted in him coming out in a blotchy rash, I took him to our local pharmacy who suggested it may be a milk protein allergy? Put him back on the SMA which lowered the severity of the symptoms for a while although not solved!

Eventually spoke with my Health Visitor who agreed and told me to put him on Soy Milk. Which I did for about a month! but the probem carried on, on some days getting worse where I was getting 5+ disgusting explosive stinking nappies a day and his bottom was so red raw and bleeding that I decided it was time for him to see the doctor who then referred him to Paeds.

When we saw the GP he was suffering with a night time cough, sounding chesty, eczema patches, sneezing amongst other things.

After speaking with the GP I tried him on Wysoy and again the symptoms cleared up somewhat.

I noted that Liquid milk whether SMA or Wysoy lessened the problems unless large quantities were drunk, but liquid milk cow or soya made the situation alot worse quite quickly?

I kept him on Wysoy until one night I ran out and had no choice but to try him on the SMA Progress again, no change! So he stayed on SMA until last Friday when we had our appointment with the Paeds.

After going through the history he was diagnosed with a Milk Allergy and Soy Intolerance and put on Nutramigen Stage 1. He refused to drink it so I was advised to slowly start mixing it into his SMA. On the Friday of the appointment he took 1/2 oz in a couple of his bottles and by the evening the nappy situation had started again. Saturday and Sunday things got a little worse so I introduced Rice Milk to try and cut down the amount of SMA he was having as I have been told to eliminate all dairy/soy from his diet. Yesterday Monday, 6 explosive horrible stinking nappies again! Today his little bottom is so sore he screams when I try and clean him, this morning we had an explosive nappy but the rest of the day has been ok, the only difference being he has had nothing at all with Gluten in nor the SMA which does have the milk proteinsm nor any Nutramigen!

My only problem with accepting the diagnosis we currently have is surely if he has milk allergy or soy intolerance he would be like this on the Formula milks and not just on liquid milks?

Could the Nutramigen be to blame for the bowel changes despite the fact he has only had half an ounce added to his bottle?

Do you think I am barking up the wrong tree with the Gluten thing or could it be a possiblity?

If Gluten is to blame how long before I should see changes?

Any comments, suggestions or help would be so greatly appreciated!!

Lisa

Lisa,

Your son has had quite the go around with everything. :(

I certainly wouldn't hurt for you to make his diet gluten, dairy and soy free. My family is free from those as well. My youngest will be 2 years next month.

It is entirely possible that the formula's would cause a problem, the same as the liquid milks.

Do you know if he tolerates rice? If so you maybe you could blend your own rice milk. It wouldn't have the vitamins unless you blended in a multivitamin too. Don't know how well that would work though. Are you still breastfeeding? That would give him more nutrients. My son was just put on a multi about 2 months ago, but your son may be too young for that.

I've started a thread for dairy, egg and soy free recipes that I have in cookbooks. Rice milk I believe is in there. You can go to my profile and search my topics.

Hi Andrea

Thanks for the reply!

I stopped breastfeeding altogether when he was about 1, put my back out and had to go onto some strong drugs so had to give it up!

I am going to carry on the gluten free as well as soy and dairy for a little while longer to see if there is any improvement!

He appears ok on rice milk, no reactions that I saw, the nappy thing got worse again on Friday and I started the rice milk on sunday so I don't think it will be a problem but I will obviously consider it if things don't improve!

I will take a look at your recipe section, sounds interesting! Been trawling the internet for ideas for things for him/us to eat.

One last question can anyone tell me how quickly should I see results as far as his nappies go? Could 24 hours be enough for things to start sorting themself out? The reason I am asking that this mornings nappy was alot better than yesterday, almost normal but not quite lol

Thanks again

Lisa

As far as the consitency of the stools, I'm not sure. I would think it wouldn't take too long though.

As far as rashes, depends on whether anything else is in the diet that he's reacting too. My family has multiple food intolerances, but they aren't real bad. My youngest gets rashes when he has something that doesn't agree with him.

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

I am new here but celiac disease is not new to me. I was diagnosed with it at age 60. At the time I weighed a whopping 89 pounds. I was so ignorant to celiac so I buried myself in learning all about it and looking for food I could eat. I lost so much weight and stayed sick all the time. So to combat the sickness I was give all sorts of meds for loose bowels and vomiting. All that just made me sicker. Eventually I chucked it all and went back to eating like I had all my life. Now I am from the south and biscuits and gravy are a big part of our food, as are breaded foods, pasta, and sandwich bread. Through the years I would try to do the gluten free thing again and am doing it now. It has not helped any. Within and hour of eating I have to run to the bathroom. I am now 75 and am wondering if I should just forget it and eat what I like, take Immodium and live the best I can. I cannot eat before going anywhere for fear of embarrassing myself. Family and church dinners are out of the question unless I eat and run straight home. I am so frustrated I just want to sit down and cry or throw something. Does everyone go through all this?
