Acne And Gluten...

stopped eating gluten for a month and my skin cleared up so amazingly! like i was constantly having acne on my chin and then within the month, little by little my skin got better.

now that my doc is making me eat it for my endo, i am all broken out again. think theres a correlation? anyone ever heard of gluten affecting acne?

hmmm....my acne has been a little worse since going gluten-free two weeks ago...but I don't doubtt that going gluten-free will help clear up acne...maybe it is that I am getting rid of the toxins and things get a little worse before they get better?

I've been reading the holistic section of the message boards at acne.org. Tons and tons of people over there are gluten intolerant. I think there's a connection between the gene that causes severe acne and the gene that causes gluten intolerance.

In the case of mild acne, I'd guess that it might clear up for good once you remain gluten-free.

Ladybugs, I too broke out really bad a few weeks into the diet. Then things started clearing up. I've been on the diet for 2 months now & my skin is doing much better. I think I had some sort of toxic cleansing through my skin (specifically my chin!) Now my skin is pushing out stuff rather than getting all red & sore. It's weird...I'll get a little hard little bump & instead of a pimple, whatever's in my pore just comes out. Guess I'm still cleaning house. :lol:

If my acne completely clears up, that's an added bonus!

Gluten Free for 6 mos. and free of a 14 year problem with facial acne - my answer is YES a gluten free diet definately cleared me up. as well as migraines and mouth ulcers (amongst many other symptoms)

My acne has been insane lately. It initially cleared up a lot when I went on the gluten-free diet. I think maybe something else (a drug or product) has gluten in it. I don't know where it's coming from... but I know that when I accidentally eat gluten I get horrible break-outs.

I have been trying to be gluten free since June 2006 when diagnosed with celiac disease, but contamination was always a problem. I have been watching very close to contamination and my face has cleared up about 95% since . I think there is a link to gluten and acne because gluten is a toxin to our bodies.

I never had bad bad acne but, when I went gluten free I did not get nearly as many break-outs as I used to. I always had a problem on my forehead and nose area. Those parts have cleared up, now I only have the break-outs when it is my "time".

My acne's better when I'm gluten-free, and my skin is less greasy - I always had bad acne ever since I was a kid, but lately, it seems to be getting better.

meh, mine's actually gotten worse since about a month ago. i think it's acutally that my skin's overdry and overcompensating by producing more oil. but i've had problem skin for a while, although since this summer until decemberish it was soooo clear- i was on birth control and topical prescription cream. it was clear when i went gluten-free, no changes until now really

i had some sort of reaction on thursday with hives all over my legs (i *think* i was glutened) and then by friday night i had TWO HUGE cystic pimples on my chin!!! i think theres definitely a correlation!

Well in my family gluten = zits. No gluten - No pimples. My skin was clear at 45 for the first time I could ever remember. Even when I gorge on chocolate. Both my teens also saw theirs clear up. Hopefully you will go back to gluten free after the endo no matter what the results. If you get extremely ill please let your doctor know.

I've been gluten-free now for over 2 years. What is happening at this point is that I'm feeling much better (finally) but still, a trace of CC will cause symptoms.

My D and other GI symptoms are not as bad as they were, in fact I was glutened recently by a product marked gluten-free--but turns out it was made on the same equipment as wheat.

As the reaction has passed, I have 2 cystic-type breakouts--one on my chin and one on my cheek. The interesting thing is that every time I get glutened (through CC), I get these breakouts in exactly the same place as the gluten reaction is working it's way out of me.

The rest of the time, my skin is completely clear. I used to have this type of breakout frequently in the years before I was diagnosed.

That's my long-winded way of saying that yes--I firmly believe there is a connection :)

Docs don't know everything...look into giving up Dairy!! this is a big contributor to endro. My 15 year mild acne issue cleared up when i gave up wheat...google the endro,,,and check out the md's who say that to give up wheat AND dairy is REALLY good for you! I am surprised a dr. would telll you to eat wheat...regardless of whether you have dramatic side effects from eating gluten, EVERY HUMAN has a hard time digesting it! Why tell a patient to eat it!? I have NEVER heard of any benefits! Medical school requires about 4 hours of dietary credits.

I put our whole family on a gluten-free diet about 3 weeks ago. My hope at the time was that I would see improvements in my three youngest children (11, 3.5, and 19mos), but I was too lazy to try to cook double meals all the time so everyone made the switch. Anyway, my 14 year old daughter is THRILLED because not only has her face cleared up immensely since our diet change, but she has also lost nearly 10 lbs!! I would have NEVER guessed some of the things that have been going on with our health could be related to something like food reactions!

I actually discovered that I might be gluten intolerant, as I read more and more about the root causes of chronic acne, food allergies/intolerances, and basically learned more about anatomy, and the chemical processes that go on inside of our bodies.

I have experienced chronic acne on my face chest and back for years, and tried everything known to man for relief. I had been to several dermatologists, and tried various perscription strength topicals, and accutane; all to no avail. Whenever i searched for articles connecting acne to wheat, dairy, gluten and various other comman food allergies, I was amazed to read of others experiences.

I tried a general elimination diet of wheat and dairy, and noticed an immediate improvement, especially on my chest and back. We all know how hard it is to try and quit eating these things that are central to the S.A.D. diet; so I messed up after the first two weeks and ate a burger, then just thought 'screw it' and did about two good days of gluten eating.

What followed was a horrible break-out on my face chest and back; the deep type of cystic acne that just SUCKS! I figured that there may be more of a connection than I thought, so I tried to continue with a general gluten-free rather than just wheat-free diet, after realizing that I might have experienced quite a few of the symptoms of gluten-intolerance (and Celiac, although everyone seems to discourage self-diagnosis, I am quite fed up with the western medical system).

I had previously experienced very many symptoms of anemia without even realizing it, including dizziness, chest pains, cold & numb hands and feet, paleness, etc. I had also experienced a myriad of different digestive..... styles. An inability to gain weight normally, short stature, the odd stools, as well as many of the psychological symptoms described; depression/anxiety, fatigue/exhaustion (at a very young age), and irritability.

As I've cut gluten out completely, only two to three weeks ago, not only have the break outs on my chest and back pretty much ceased completely and my face is clearing faster than I have EVER seen or experienced (except when I ingested the horrible-for-your-liver drug accutane), but many of the other sympotms have been coming to a stand still as well. I feel (and LOOK) great!

From what I have gathered, if you already have a predisposition towards acne, and you are gluten intolerant/celiac, this is an definite recipe for breakouts. Let me explain; the partially, or improperly digested gluten-proteins get thrown into the blood stream and treated as toxic invaders. Your immune system - which is probably already working over-time as a result of chronic-inflammation - goes crazy on these 'bacteria' and tries to kick them out through the skin; the largest elimination organ in the human body. A stressed out liver, and blood-sugar issues only exacerbate the problem for many. The inflammation factor is also what makes the blemishes red and 'inflamed'.

That is the shortest and easiest way to put it, but if anybody wants to read more about this connection just type in 'gluten and acne' on google.

Acne may be a symptom of metabolic disorders. And I'm a big metabolic disorder. I'm not having as much of a problem with it since I started thyroid hormone replacement since being diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Acne is a pretty common symptom with Hashimoto's - autoimmune thyroiditis; which is common in conjunction with celiac disease. Just throwing out that possibility.

      Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.

      @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

      No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

      @Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test.       I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played
