B-12 And Rage?

NoSugarShell

I went to The Vitamin Shoppe on my lunch break today and bought some B-12. I have read so much about it I wanted to give it a try. I took it around 1:00. It is the kind that dissolves under you tongue.

Anyway, I felt a little weird after taking it. Now, I have been an absolute raging lunatic for about 2 hours. I mean really, really bad. I have never felt this pissed off in my entire life. I have not eaten anything out of the ordinary. I do not take any supplements or medication at all so that is the only thing I took today.

Has anyone ever had such a reaction to B-12?

Gosh, not that severe anyway. It might be a reaction to something else in the sublingual tablet. I take those too, and I know there's a couple of ingredients that normally don't sit well with me, but I haven't had a reaction like you described. However, I am going to start getting B12 injections instead.

I DO know that the last time I went to see my doctor he suggested the injections...I got one that day, but I had already taken TWO of the sublingual tablets...I asked the nurse if that would be a problem, and she said it shouldn't be, but that I might be up at midnight wrapping gifts...in other words, it might make me really hyper.

Sounds like a reaction to food products - not B12. Sublingual B12 makes me one happy camper! What are the ingredients?

NoSugarShell Explorer

Ingredients

Sorbitol, Mannitol, Natural Raspberry Flavor, Natural Peach Flavor, and Magnesium Stearate.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease). Suitable for vegetarians. Contains no yeast, dairy, egg, gluten, soy or wheat. Contains no sugar, salt, preservatives, or artificial color, flavor or fragrance.

Here is the info from the package. Please if anyone see anything funny let me know. I want to figure this out.

The only thing I can think of are the sugars - ingredients ending with -ol. They could be made from corn; do you have corn problems at all? I know some of my bad foods put me in a rage like that. The ingredients combined with the disclaimers look ok to me. Hmmm.....

I realize this info comes from the EU but I thought since at this point their labeling requirments are a bit more strict than ours that the info might be of befifit. In the US substances such as the ones listed at present are still considered to be safe if derived from wheat. Since in the US these are not considered to be something someone reacts to adding them to a product would not be something that would require the company to label, actually they wouldn't be required to name the source at all in any drug or supplement. They could still call the item gluten free by US standards even if the ingredient was wheat derived. I would look for another brand without the sugar alcohols. I use Country Life, they do have a bit of sorbital in the ingredient list but I am very sensitive and have never had any kind of a reaction. One other note, have you throughly looked at everything you consumed for the 3 days before you took the B12. The reaction could have been to something else and the timing of appearance of symptoms could have been a coincidence. The bold are mine.

"For wheat allergic people and for celiac patients, the indication of the origin ("wheat") of the substances derived from wheat will in many cases complicate the information value of the ingredients' list. They shall have to discriminate, among the individual ingredients, those to which they react, and those to which they do not. Numerous substances1 derived from wheat are currently used and are claimed to generally contain only trace amounts of proteins, if any. Unfortunately, there is not at present neither a scientific proof, nor a regulatory norm ensuring that these substances never contain harmful proteins. The thresholds for adverse reactions of present proteins are variable, and therefore we cannot call the European Legislative Bodies to amend the Directive to exclude some of these substances from the mandatory labelling of their origin.

We share the Legislator's view that it has to be the duty of the European Commission and of the EFSA European Food Safety Authority to examine theses substances case by case, to establish regulations, if appropriate, and to update subsequently the list of substances considered as causing hypersensitivity. That such a technical evaluation could be done by a voting-process of a Parliament seems highly questionable.

For celiac and wheat allergic patients, it is in EFA point of view better to have more information, than to have restricted information.

B vitamins often give a reaction to those first starting them or changing brands. Often people feel sick and lethargic before they feel better on the vit. It is kind of a detox type of thing. I'd give it a couple weeks to give the body its switch over time.

Ingredients

Sorbitol, Mannitol, Natural Raspberry Flavor, Natural Peach Flavor, and Magnesium Stearate.

The Sorbitol and Mannitol are my problem ingredients. Those tend to give me gatrointestinal issues more than mental ones though. I got my second B12 injection yesterday, and so far so good and no intestinal issues either.

Funny, I was getting the B12 for the first time at exactly the same time as you. I'll trade you my fatigue, brain fog and vertigo for your rage. I'm use to rage, had it my whole life until I started controlling my blood sugar levels.

So far I haven't experienced anything from the B12. I have taken 2 doses a day for 2 days. I'm hoping it helps me clear my head.

I thought I had this whole thing figured out. I thought a little cross contamination would not be a problem for me. I think it is. I've been messed up for the past month. I'm hoping that some testing I am going to do will help me figure out the rest of the picture but for now it's lots of coffee and being mindful of where the closest bathroom is. Fun!

Update, I feel like total crap today...just really depressed. I am really wondering if the sugar alcohols could be it. I tried to find pure B12 but couldn't.

Does that article mean that legally they can say something is gluten free even though it's not?

I am so sure I didn't eat anything wrong. I ate the same exact thing everyday for the last 4 days.

Anyway, I don't want to discount the B12 but I am really scared to try it again.

I wouldn't think there's enough sugar in one tablet to make a difference how you feel. Compared to how much sugar you consume in a day, this would be only a small, small percentage of total sugar.

Could you talk to you doctor about getting B12 shots? I'm wondering if those might have less additives.

NoSugarShell Explorer

Does anyone know of a b12 brand that is pure? I am searching right now with no luck.

Ken70 Apprentice

This link is slightly off topic but I found some info on Dr. Mercola's site regarding B12 and Vegan Diets. It has a ton of info. my brain melted down halfway through but here is the link

What dosage are you taking? If sounds like it might be too much. I take the vitamin shoppe brand 1000mg .....sublingual .

I feel better( a nice feeling) but not buzzed...

NoSugarShell Explorer

I took 2000mg. Maybe that was too much. I am gun shy about taking this brand again though. I would sure love to find a more pure source.

dlp252 Apprentice

Egads, 1000 mg? The tablets I was taking are only 1 mg and under %DV it says 16,670%. What type of B-12 is it...the one I take is methylcobalamin.

I'll have to ask how much I'm getting in the shots.

I think it's 1000mcg which is probably the same as 1 mg. Not positive about this but I am taking 1000mcg doses twice a day. Seems to have helped. Today is the first day in two weeks a haven't woken up with vertigo and brain fog. I'm actually taking one of the doses while using the Elyptical machine as strenuously as possible for 1 hour. I personally believe heavy exercise helps to mitigate alot of my issues.

Oh yeah, that makes sense, lol. I take mine twice a day too (or I did before I started the shots). I think the B12 has helped me a lot...I've been taking it since April of last year.

Exercise is crucial for me, lol. My doctors have sort of restricted me from doing it too intensely (an adrenal issue), but it's intense enough, lol.

NoSugarShell Explorer

Sorry about that. It is 2000mcg.

Anyway, I went to a health store this morning and found a brand called Pure Advantage.

It says no dairy, egg, sugar, corn, yeast, wheat, soy or glutens.

Then ingredients are purified water, vegatable glycerine, potassium sorbate.

Each spray is 500mcg and I did two sprays.

So far I feel pretty good. I am up cleaning the house and making brownies so that's a good sign. It isn't making me feel weird like the other stuff.

I am pretty convinced it was the ingredients in the other stuff. I will also post an update later.

dlp252 Apprentice

Great NoSugarShell!!! I'm glad you were able to find one without the other stuff!

Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes

EXACTLY! I was asked yesterday on my LAST video call with Standford and I stated exactly yes absolutely this is why I need the name! One, get proper care, two, not get worse.Im falling apart, stressed out, in pain and just opened email from Stanford stating I was rude ect.I want that video reviewed by higher ups and see if that women still has a job or not.Im saying this because I've been medically screwed and asking for help because bills don't pay itself. This could be malpratice siit but im not good at finding lawyers

We feel your pain. It took me 20+ years of regularly going to doctors desperate for answers only to be told there was nothing wrong with me … when I was 20 pounds underweight, suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies, and in a great deal of pain. I had to figure it out for myself. If you're in the U.S., not having an official diagnosis does mean you can't claim a tax deduction for the extra expense of gluten-free foods. But it can also be a good thing. Pre-existing conditions might be a reason why a health insurance company might reject your application or charge you more money. No official diagnosis means you don't have a pre-existing condition. I really hope you don't live in the U.S. and don't have these challenges. Do you need an official diagnosis for a specific reason? Else, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're diligent in remaining gluten free, your body should be healing as much as possible so there isn't much else you could do anyway. And there are plenty of us out here who never got that official diagnosis because we couldn't eat enough gluten to get tested. Now that the IL-2 test is available, I suppose I could take it, but I don't feel the need. Someone else not believing me really isn't my problem as long as I can stay in control of my own food.

If you're just starting out in being gluten free, I would expect it to take months before you learned enough about hidden sources of gluten before you stopped making major mistakes. Ice cream? Not safe unless they say it is gluten free. Spaghetti sauce? Not safe unless is says gluten-free. Natural ingredients? Who knows what's in there. You pretty much need to cook with whole ingredients yourself to avoid it completely. Most gluten-free products should be safe, but while you're in the hypersensitive phase right after going gluten free, you may notice that when something like a microwave meal seems to not be gluten-free … then you find out that it is produced in a shared facility where it can become contaminated. My reactions were much-more severe after going gluten free. The analogy that I use is that you had a whole army of soldiers waiting for some gluten to attack, and now that you took away their target, when the stragglers from the gluten army accidentally wander onto the battlefield, you still have your entire army going out and attacking them. Expect it to take two years before all of the training facilities that were producing your soldiers have fallen into disrepair and are no longer producing soldiers. But that is two years after you stop accidentally glutening yourself. Every time you do eat gluten, another training facility can be built and more soldiers will be waiting to attack. Good luck figuring things out.
