The last 2 times I had plain canned Alaskan salmon I got indigestion. This is rare for me. Is it the fat content? Or something else. Anyone else have a problem with this?

I'd guess fat...or pcb's....but probably not the latter. fresh salmon gets me sometimes from fat.

I'd stopped eating salmon because i started noticing it bothered me. WHen I took my A.L.C.A.T. test it showed up as a sensitivity. But hey, if it bothers you . . . dont eat it.

Do you get the same symptoms when you eat fresh salmon?? If not I am wondering if it is the processing of the canned fish, or the source?

Maybe test out the two and see if you get symptoms both times. If you do then it could be the fat is bothering you or you might have developed a sensitivity to salmon.

Dear fedora,

I too, have had this trouble with tuna and salmon. They are fatty fish, which is one possible cause of heartburn. However, as Julie said, it may be something the fish is processed with. I read recently excessive salt in foods can trigger heartburn. Reflux is a major issue for me, so this is very important to consider. You just never know!

Sincerely,

I have GERD, which is pretty common for people over 40, and salmon (and most fatty fish) makes me have terrible indigestion.

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
