I remember when I read the symptoms for Celiac and I KNEW, without a doubt, that was what I had. I think I may have done it again, but I need your honest input please!

I am sooooo frusturated I can barely stand it! I was diagnosed with Celiac back in Nov of 07 and have been gluten free since then. My stomach issues have improved 99% and i am so pleased. However, I am still exhausted, zero energy, having major hair loss, dry skin, brain fog, aches and pains, can't lose weight. I am gluten free and also a vegetarian so it makes no sense to me why i am 30 lbs overweight! I eat very healthy. I have gained and lost 30lbs twice in my life without changing my eating or exercise habits. Within the last week i feel like there is a lump in my throat, choking on food, and constant need to swallow. Also having a hard time breathing and yawning a lot.

I have been tested for Lupus and RA both with negative results. My thyroid has been tested numerous times. The 1st time I was on the verge of being hypo and everytime after that has been normal. I did have epstein bar back in feb of 07.

After reading some info, my symptoms are almost dead on for hypothyroidism. I read that if you have celiac that you are more likely to have other autoimmune disease. So... could I have Hashimotos? Which can have both hypo and hyper symptoms... which might explain the unexplained weight gain and loss?

Hi Lisa, definitely sounds like thyroid to me. I am a long time thyroid patient. You should go to thyroid.about.com. and post questions to their forum. (lower left corner of main page) The hardest thing will be to find a good doctor as you will understand after you do some reading on that site. Where do you live? There is a list of top docs on the site for different states. check it out. If you can find a good doc that will treat symptoms and not just look at numbers from your bloodwork, hopefully you can feel better soon.

I agree that you sound like you have hypothyroidism. Do you remember what your numbers were when you were tested?

Check out this website, they have great information. Also, make sure your adrenals get tested as well. Most people have adrenal fatigue when their thyroid has been out of whack for a while.

Stopthethyroidmadness has some great information (and some not so great). But one thing you need to check is that your doctor is using the latest lab values for TSH. It used to be up to 5 was normal and now the cut off is 3. Some experts think it should be 2. My TSH was 2.8 and I was very hypo. Im on Armour. It helped a lot. My doctor treats by symptoms and not just labs anyway. The Armour has supressed my TSH. It did with the first small dose, but I needed to keep increasing my does to get rid of the hair loss (and I had a weird patch of severly kinky hair). Muscle twitches. Those went away once I got to the right dose for me. My doctor ignores the TSH now. And asks how I feel. It helps that I am well aware of the symptoms of excess (anxiety, insomnia, rapid pulse, sweating, etc.). And I am good.

Sounds like a thyroid deal to me. I would have it tested - make sure to ask to be tested for the autoimmune diseases that cause thyroid problems if you suspect Hashimoto's. Have them test your T3 and T4, as well as test for the thyroid antibodies. I'm going through this whole thyroid mess too right now, only with major symptoms of hyper-thyroidism. I hope you figure out what's causing it!

      Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

      I'm sure it's chemically perfect. Most of them taste lousy!

      Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !
