Gluten Free And Menstruation

Does going gluten-free effect the body enough to cause irregular/missed periods at first?

I've always had irregular and often heavy periods and also have had ammenorhea in the past, but since going gluten-free my PMS symptoms have been all over the place at random times of the month. I missed a period this month (only have brown discharge) and then 2 weeks after the missed period I got my period. I just feel like I've had PMS for 2 months! not horrible, but tired all the time/lower back aching and circles under my eyes.... is this a normal reaction?

I don't think there is a normal reaction that applies to everyone. My period became clockwork at 28 days the first month, but I got yucky cramps, which I almost never got before. The cramps subsided. I also have had almost no emotional pms.

Your body is still rebalancing it seems. Hope it steadies out for you soon.

Yeah, I think it's definitely a rebalancing. Mine was always irregular, like maybe 4 or 5 a year. They're still not totally predictable, but I have definitely noticed that things are becoming more regular. My period regulating was not something I would have ever thought would regulate, but since it has,I'm more convinced it's Celiac. In fact, it regulated almost immediately.

So far this year I've already had 4... and one on the way. Celiac affects every body system it seems, so I wouldn't be surprised if things calm down for you in another few months.

My periods were always regular. In the past I had some heavy ones, clotting and cramping, but that has been better this past year.

Now since going gluten-free, I have this weird cramping and lower backache "mid" cylce with ovulation. This is totally new. Two cycles now gluten free and this both times. And last ovulation a bit of spotting. Wondering what this is.....hopefully is some sort of rebalancing act. :)

Just found this:

Looks like I am "fertile" again. I knew I was anovulatory for years. gluten-free seems to have kicked in my fertility. What a boon for women who are having trouble conceiving. A gluten-free diet may be all they need. :) And certainly worth a try.

I DEFINITELY have the Mittelschmerz thing. EVER since I can remember, but now that I'm more regular I started noticing it more.

Yeah, there's a definite link between undiagnosed Celiac and infertility. When I told my Gi about the regulation of my cycle, he wasn't surprised at all. In fact, he said that is another reason he is suspect of Celiac in my case. It's absolutely amazing what one protein can do to your whole body!!!! And what the removal of that protein can do!!!

Even tho it is a little uncomfy, I am going to take it as a good sign. :) It only lasts about a day or so. Not long.

I almost always had my period ever month just not clockwork like now. It is EVERY 28 days sharp now. Also before I had begun to have a few really long cycles(43,45, 48 days long) every once in a blue moon. My PA said I was not ovulating during that time based on symptoms. The thing is I was very fertile in my early 20s. I dropped two eggs at 24 and had twins at 25. So it was weird that I was not ovulating sometimes starting at about 30

oh my gosh.

I got my period AGAIN. it has only been 18 days. Weird. This is the earliest I have ever had one. I had no Pms. I feel fine. I was sick earlier this week, so maybe I am cleaning out.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
