Kaiti,

I read your post about gluten-free products..I need shampoo (I've been using Thermosilk), moisturizer (I use oil of Olay), and face make-up (I use Mac), and shaving cream.

Do you know offhand if these are gluten-free or have recommendations for gluten-free?

Someone here said Coppertone is all gluten-free..do u know if that is true?

jknnej- I use dove soaps, shampoos, and conditioners, hairsprays etc....I called them and was told that they will not hide anything in their ingredients. I like to stick with one brand that I know is gluten-free. It is easier for me at least.

For makeup ALL of Bare Escentuals makeup is gluten-free...lipstick, eye liner and shadow, mascara etc...some of the moisturizers are and the ones that are not will show the ingredients but again all the makeup is. I use banana boat sunscreen when I use sunscreen (I hardly use it) I have heard that coppertone is gluten-free but I have not checked with them personally.

Last I heard Oil of olays body wash and moisturizers were gluten-free. I have not checked with them in a while though. I was told by Proctor& Gamble that anything manufactured by them don't hide wheat,rye, barley, or oats under anything.

For other Moisturizers I use Neutrogena. They sent me a gluten-free list of their products. If you are interested in that I would be more than happy to send it to you.

Lancome makeup is all gluten-free, i use garneier fructis for shampoos, carmol for lotion, skintimate shaving cream

I called Lancome a week or so ago and I checked about 10 things of lipstick and they said it was all gluten-free. But when I asked about all of their products they said they could not guarantee it and I would have to check with each individual thing. So do you know if all the products are gluten-free molly? That would be really cool if that whole brand was gluten-free as well :D

While this makeup thread is going, I was looking, too, for gluten-free powder and foundation, as that is the most likely thing that I could injest other than lipstick (when I'm washing my face at night, there's sometimes "run-off" from the water onto my lips, and I'm trying to be SO careful!).

Any good powders or foundations? I currently use all Clinique makeup, other than Cover Girl lipstick.

I think MAC makeup is gluten free.

jmengert-Be careful about CoverGirl lipstick. I called them and they said that their lipsticks were good except they told me the ones with fragrance in them could have traces of gluten in them.

I also called Clinique and they could not guarantee me so I threw all of my clinique stuff away:( I like that brand 2.

The foundation I use in Bare Escentuals. It works really good for me. There whole line is gluten-free as well.

Yeah, I thought that I would have to get rid of my Clinique stuff. I think that I'm just going to go get all MAC stuff and maybe mix in some Lancome. It's so expensive, though, and I hate that I have to get rid of my makeup that wasn't so cheap itself, either. So very annoying!

I know it is so expensive. I use Bare Escentuals and since I had to switch lines my parents are paying half and even then I find it expensive :lol: I had to get rid of literally all the makeup and that was hard because some of the colors worked so good for me...but then I figured it it makes me feel better I'll find another good color. Hope you find something that works well :D

Mary Kay foundation and powder are glutenfree, as are the lipsticks, eye shadows, and blushes. The waterproof mascara is glutenfree, but the other two they sell are not. The clear nail polish, base, and top coat are gluten-free, but the colored nail polishes all have wheat in them. Mary Kay is the only makeup I use, so it is the only one I know anything about.

Could somebody tell me how they found out MAC is gluten-free, because I got a different response from them. They said they wouldn't guarantee anything and sent me a very long list of things to read in the very tiny printed ingredients statement of each product I'd consider buying. If it's all gluten-free across the board, so to speak, that would be a relief.

Gals- You should of seen me in the hair salon the other day........... Telling them that the shampoo/ conditioner had to be totally wheat free/ gluten-free. OMG they called the companies and went crazy.

Every time I go to get my hair frosted this happens, Now I have it down pat what they used.

Where can I get this Bare essentuals brand? I need some lipstick STAT and I don't want to use anything that might not be gluten-free. I use Mac make up but I'll have to check on it now.

jknnej-QVC offers kits with their products so if you go to their site they have a whole thing for the bare escentuals brand. You can go to bareescentuals.com to learn more about their products. Also, you can look up kits on ebay but make sure they are new and sealed. I got some good deals from off of their. I love this brand.

This is a great question! :)

I can't tell you how many companies I have contacted with this same question. I have basically recieved the same answer from everyone. Even Johnson and Johnson for their baby lotion, "We do not add gluten to our products but cannot guarantee it because many of our ingredients come from outside sources." How ridiculous is that? <_< You would think they would want to know what's in thier own product!

I did however, get an answer from maybelline recently, they said to look in the "International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary" which is a standard in the industry. I was going to check it out online but have not had a chance yet.

It does drive me crazy though, how you can't seem to get clear responses from companies. I can't remember which one it was but one of them said "we have talked to doctors about this and have been told that since you have to ingest gluten to be affected by it, and that lotions, shampoos, and makeups are applied to the skin, that it should not be a problem." This is nuts!! :blink: Anything applied to the skin, soaks in at a cellular level. If not, then lotion companies are putting out false advertisements! Anything on the skin can cause rashes, allergic reations, ect. who are these doctors?

Hi - this is my first attempt to post a message so I hope it works! My daughter and I have both been diagnosed with celiac disease in the last two years and only now have realised that gluten-free means makeup too!!

We have had fabulous and detailed help from Justine Vella at the Estee Lauder group of companies.

These include: Clinique, Estee Lauder, Mac, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger,Origins,Bobbi Brown,Michael Kors,and Jo Malone. Send an email to Justine with your preferred products and she will check them out for you and where necessary will recommend an alternative. She has made a difference to us overnight as I have discovered I have been using lipliners containing gluten - and I thought I was being so careful!!

I use cover girl loose powder- i've never had a problem with it, but does anyone know off hand if it is safe? Also, what about Maybelline products. I just bought shiny-licious lip gloss, and didnt even think that it could make me sick.... I think i read some where on here before that estee lauder lipstick is not gluten-free? is that true?... Also does anyone know about avon products? I just want to be safe, before apply my make-up again! Thanks girls!

Are there products really gluten free? For some reason whenever I use Estee Lauder products or Clinique products I can horrible headaches and my eyes get bloodshot. I also read earlier on in this post that someone stated that Skintimate shaving cream is gluten free. I was actually just looking into this because everytime I use it my legs break out in a blotchy rash. Maybe I'm allergic to something else in these products...

After readin Kaiti's posts on Bare Essentuals, I got some and tried it. This stuff is great. It takes some practice since the process is a little different than with the drugstore brands, but it has a much softer, less made-up look to it. I just got a few items, but I am definitely going back for more. I am getting way too many compliments to quit now.

Most common store brands contain wheat starch. My mom had to change her nail polish so she would not have wheat on them while preparing food for me. Here is a brand that has gluten free nail polish:

Thanks so much Kaiti! I'm going to get some of that so I won't gluten my daughter while making her food too. :) Although I'm sad I have to get rid of my giant (30 bottle) nail polish collection now. :(

      This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

      Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

      Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
