My tongue has been coated for a few weeks? Anyone else have this? I've been taking mega probiotics, but it's still coated.

Try stronger probiotics.

Also, cut out sugar and simple carbs.

Use coconut oil instead of butter (coconut oil kills yeast).

Grapefruit seed extract and other natural products are good anti-fungals.

Carla,

Thanks for responding. I sent a reply previously, but something happened with my computer, so hopefully there won't be two.

I already take a probiotic that has a proprietary blend of 24 billion CFU. That's pretty high. Do you take more than that? If so, what brand are you using? I had never heard that coating of the tongue could be fungal. I'm also going to try to grapefruit seed extract. Had not heard of that one either. We have grape seed extract.

Thanks.

Does it also have many different strains? It sounds like it's a good one.

Yeast is fungal .... white coating on the tongue is caused by yeast. :) Good luck.

The probiotic I take is called FlorSmart by Renew Life. It was formulated by Brenda Watson, CNC. Anyway it has 10 strains so hopefully, it will kick in.

I will have to cut back on the sugar. I can't believe it. I've only had one yeast infection my whole life. Also I eat yogurt (Stonyfield or Brown Cow) every single day.

Thanks ShayFL. I read the article and I'm going to start with a tongue scraper. I really hope it's not a yeast thing and because of all of the probiotics I take in addition to the yogurt, I can't imagine it would be.

If the tongue scraper doesn't work, I guess I'll add more probiotics and the grapefruit seed extract that Carla mentioned. I just hate to add any more supplements if I don't have to.

fresh garlic works... oil of oregano, pao d'arco

I use Renew Life probiotics and LOVE them. I prefer these to any others I have taken, don't expect things to happen overnight. It took me almost a year of HEAVY probiotics AND antifungals for my tounge to not be coated and white any longer.

be well! :)

I love garlic and will be adding more to my diet. We're having garlic shrimp this weekend. The tips are great!

My tongue is just barely coated, so hopefully it will be back to normal. It doesn't feel weird and I don't have bad breath from it. I just don't like it.

Which Renew Life probiotics are you taking? Which ones did you start with? I've been taking probiotics for years before being dx'd, but not in the amount I'm taking now. I'm also taking the fiber by Renew Life.

I want to mention that this can and will be passed back and forth by kissing. So, if you have a boyfriend/husband you might want him to take some probiotics/garlic/etc. too so you don't just get it back from him.

Carla,

Good point to consider. We both take probiotics. Hubby is actually a health fanatic! He's been taking probiotics for years. I'm still hoping this isn't yeast. I'm going to go get a tongue scraper and see what happens.

Just curious what you guys consider "HEAVY" probiotics? I think this is a relevant question for this thread. I tried a probiotic a few weeks ago that had 250 BILLION colony forming units. And after a few days, I was miserable. I was bloated like a 6 month pregnant woman. I had shortness of breath I was so bloated. Gas ex didnt touch it. I quit taking it. So now I am on an acidophilus sporogene 1.5 billion CFU am and Acidophilus/Bifidum 5 Billion CFU pm. So a total of 6.5 Billion CFU. I am feeling fine with them. No bloating, D, etc.

Is HEAVY use more than this?

ShayFL,

The one I take has 24 billion CFU. Previously, I was taking acidophilus Pearls by Enzymatic Therapy. This is not the same as Enzymedica that people have had problems with. Anyway, it only had 1 billion CFU. I started taking the new one when my tongue got coated. I'll reduce it when I'm back to normal. I do not have any adverse side effects from it.

Thanks Jenny. I figured I could up them. I used to take the Renew Life probiotics, but nixed them when I cut out rice (and all grains cuz they have rice flour in them).

Because I'm on so many antibiotics for Lyme Disease, heavy to me is Theralac and Ultra Flora daily. I believe Theralac has 35 billion, and I take three Ultra Flora at 20 billion each.

I also take VSL#3 a couple times per week as needed. It's 450 billion.

But this would be overkill for most. ;)

have you tried gargling with apple cyder vinegar or crest blue prohealth mouthwash? both of those work for me.. after nothing else i tried did. including 4 different medicines.

Shay I would be so bummed if I couldn't take the Renew Life I really love their products.

Heavy would be 24-50 billions, per

MAKE SURE you take them on an empty stomach. Or it's useless... (I set my cell phone alarm to remind me every night I wake up @ 3 am) :lol:B)

be well!

both of the things i listed are supposed to work on yeast, and while for over a year multiple doctors swore what was on my tongue was yeast, and after a year long sugar-free low-carb diet & a powerful strike of probiotics and vitimins, i found out it may have actually been directly linked to celiac disease.

having a coating on your tongue is not necessarily thrush, as generally assumed, but may be related to digestive problems especially if on teh back of your tongue, if its a pale white, yellow, or even pale green. generally occur only in people weakened immune systems, and in my case may have also been a side effect of my chronic tonsillitis or even sinusitis.

dont assume its yeast, get tested if it doenst go away, they just swab some off. if it turns out to be yeast, dont rely on organic cures alone (despite the fact that there are real herbal cures for the common cold and stuff, yeast is very hard to treat herbally) the best safest and Fastest cure is to get medicine form your doctor. the longer a yeast infection goes untreated the greater chance of it growing.

Wow, raen that is all very interesting! :)

Thanks for the advice on the apple cyder vinegar. I was taking it everyday (1 tablespoon mixed with some apple juice) and just recently stopped. I had read it was good for PH balance as well as heartburn. I stopped taking it, but will start again.

Also, the coating is just about gone! I started brushing my tongue more with my toothbrush which seems to have helped. I still want to get a tongue scraper.

Collette,

I take my probiotics as soon as I wake up. How long do you wait before you eat? I usually wait about an hour. Is that enough?

Thanks.

yes hour is perfect!! :)

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana
    • trents
@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?
    • Theresa2407
thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
