Candy For Valentine's Day

I love chocolate, candy, you name it...and because this is my first gluten-free Valentine's Day, I was curious about gluten-free chocolates and such. I've heard that Russell Stover chocolates (I'm assuming that includes their Valentine's products?) are gluten-free...anyone had their chocolate without a reaction to verify?

Also, any other gluten-free candy that's out there? I know Hershey packages their kisses and mini peanut butter cups with Valentine's colors--still okay for us?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

Spangler gluten-free Candy

Q: My child has an intolerance to the gluten protein found in wheat.  What products do NOT contain this ingredient?

A: Dum Dum Pops, Super Dum Dums, Ice Cream Dum Dums, Saf-T-Pops, Swirl Saf-T-Pops, Astro Pops, Marshmallow Treats, Candy Canes, Cane Classics, Dum Dum Canes, Lemonhead Lollipops, Atomic Fireball Lollipops, and Picture Pops do not contain the gluten protein found in wheat, barley, rye, or oats.

We have contacted our suppliers on the ingredients we use, including sugar, corn syrup, citric, malic, & lactic acid, artificial flavors & colors, starch, release agents, and processing aids.  These products do not contain the gluten protein that causes a problem for people with Celiac Sprue.

Russell Stover

Are your products gluten free?

To the best of our knowledge, our products are gluten free, with the exception of our cookie products such as Cookies and Creams, or S'mores. These products contain a small amount of gluten. This would be clearly indicated on the ingredient label as containing wheat.

Thanks, celiac3270, that helps a lot. I'm assuming that because Hershey's labels include anything with wheat, etc. in it that their miniatures (the peanut butter cups and such) should be okay for Valentine's day, too, right?

KaitiUSA Enthusiast

Yes Hershey's will mark their labels is what I have been told over and over. :D I love Russell Stover candy we got some yesterday and I devoured almost the whole box

jmengert Enthusiast

It's so great to know that Russell Stover is gluten-free--I'm such a chocolate person, so it's nice to know I'll be fine! Thanks for the tip!

jmengert Enthusiast

Argghhh! Kaiti, a question for you--I received some Russell Stover's candy, and the box clearly states that this candy was produced on the same lines with wheat, though wheat or any gluten containing product is not listed as ingredients--did you box say the same thing? I was SO looking forward to eating the candy, and now I'm scared.....

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.
