Why Do I Feel Like This Today?

I started a gluten free diet after my diagnosis last month. Today I feel in a funk and I am not sure if it is just due to my "time of the month" or because I ate something with gluten.

Usually by day 3 of my cycle I am feeling a little better because I know it is almost over but last night and today I feel so uuuggghhh! Very short tempered, mad, tired, weepy and my hip joints are achy. I know I am more aware of the symptoms so I guess I know what to look for. I don't know what I could have eaten to make me feel like this. This is what I had yesterday maybe you can see something I can't

Rice Chex (gluten free)

Whole milk

Trail Mix (nuts, raisins, sunflower seeds only)

Grapes

Steak (made at home with garlic salt & regular salt)

Bakes Potato

Country Crock Spread and Lite Sour Cream

Peas & Green Bean (plain)

Kettle Corn - read the label - Ingredients: Popcorn, Canola Oil, Sugar, Sea Salt, Soy Lecithin.

Walgreen's Sherbert - read the label and it looked ok

am I missing something, do you see anything I shouldn't have? Also if I ate it yesterday would I still feel like this today?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would check the "lite sour cream"

A lot of lite or reduced fat dairy product add starches to bind them together and that could be your culprit.

It also might be that your body is still trying to heal. One month gluten-free is amazing and congrats, but it takes a while for the body to heal. (The portion of your intestine that is damaged by gluten is also the same portion that breaks down dairy, some people experience "temporary lactose intolerance" while their intestines heal - so it could be the dairy that is bothering you even if it doesn't have any gluten in it.)

The other issue could be cross contamination with something in your home (crumbs, old cooking utensils from your gluten days, etc.)

"Looking o.k." might not be enough. Sometimes you have to call the company to make sure. Were they "Processed in a facility that processes wheat?"

Nuts can be "dusted" with wheat (or wheat derivatives) so check that trail mix. Call if you have to.

Kettle Corn is gluten-free. I checked.

How bout that Garlic Salt? Who makes it? Check ingredients. You may have to call.

Sherbet.....did it have any kind of "malt" flavoring or "barley"??

***With all of this in mind, many of us found changes in our menstrual cycles as our bodies healed. I now have light cramping and spotting mid cycle as well which I learned means I am ovulating. That only happened now and again in the years before, now it is everytime. I am fertile again.

Check out the foods and above all be PATIENT with yourself. ***Hug***

While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
