Weird (possible?) Gluten Symptom

Hi, I'm experiencing, among other things, a weird symptom that I believe is related to gluten. I'm experiencing a lot of pressure in my ear canal, in the sides of my head, behind my eyes, and in my forehead. This is accompanied by a minor background headache, a sort of intense gaze (it's difficult for me to relax my gaze -- I kind of freak some people out on the street, even), and a sort of "buzzing" in my head (vs. the calm, quiet, open, peaceful spacious feeling I have in my head when I'm healthy). The best way I can say it, in short, is that I have a lot of pressure and 'energy' collected up in my head that I can't let go of.

Has anybody else experienced similar symptoms with gluten or food intolerances in general? I'm also suspecting that it could be dairy or eggs. I'm especially suspecting eggs since I ate a bunch this weekend and am having strong symptoms now, but it seems like a weird symptom to be caused by eggs.

When this happens, I also get a nervousness in my body, sort of deep down inside, that I can't shake. I've always been an extremely relaxed person, and can tell that these symptoms are coming from something that I am consuming.

Any insight or leads would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

John

PS This forum has been immensely helpful as I've struggled through the self-diagnosis and first weeks of (attempting) to be gluten free.

Because of the neurological aspects of your experience, have you considered posting your query on Neurotalk?

Open Original Shared Link is the celiac forum

Another source of info on less common reactions to food is Plant Poisons and Rotten Stuff. It is actually a network of websites- a blog, wiki and forum that I think you might find very useful.

Particularly since you are self-diagnosing (do you have any tests that implicate gluten?), a trial of the failsafe diet could be a good investment of your time.

Good luck!

RollingAlong,

Thanks for the response. The Neurotalk site looks interesting -- I'll definitely check it out some more.

Yes, my symptoms are exclusively brain fog, fatigue, depression, sever anxiety, and one that I forgot to mention blurry vision. I'm pretty convinced that they are gluten related as once I went hardcore gluten free 5-weeks ago, my symptoms slowly but surely (day-by-day) improved. Even my vision began to get sharper and sharper. At the 3 1/2 week point, even though I still was not 100%, I felt like I glutened myself somehow, as all the symptoms came back with a vengeance. Since then, over the last week and a half, I've once again begun to feel better little by little.

The only things I did out of the ordinary, to possibly gluten myself, was eat a LOT of eggs (I've otherwise been avoiding eggs) and I inadvertantly got some bodywash (at the gym) in my mouth. I'm suspecting it was the bodywash that's the culprit. I don't have an ingredients list because it came out of the dispensor at the gym.

I'm also wondering if some of the pressure in my ear canals and behind my eyes is possibly 'just' seasonal allergies. I do have itchy eyes as well. If it is fall allergies, I've never had them like this before.

Again, thanks for the reply. If being gluten free combined with a good fall frost does not resolve everything, I'll also look into the failsafe diet.

For other readers, I'm still curious if anyone has any similar pattern to their symptoms and/or if anyone can provide insight into why these symptoms would occur.

Thanks so much!

John

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
