School Me: Being Glutened

I am so new to all this and I am wondering whether I got accidentally glutened this week.

I was 100% fine, until I ate a small amount of beef jerky that had MSG in it.

This morning I had a minor amount of gas, and what I can only describe as....leakage. EWWW!

Anyway, is this a symptom of being 'glutened'? What other symptoms should I look for in the future to help track my progress with the gluten-free diet?

thank you

-jen

Hey Jen,

MSG may not be too good for you, but it's not gluten related.

I took me several months of healing before I could tell that I had been glutened. In the beginning everything that I ate effected me due to the fact that I was not healed.

Give it some time, be careful about what you eat and read, read, read from this site. ;)

ok...I will try to be patient and try not to assume too much yet B)

ugh...I've been feeling a little sick all day. NOTHING NEAR like before, but disappointing.

So are ups and downs (digestively speaking) a normal part of the first few weeks/months? I just don't know if I am being anal enough (HA!) about separating cookware, etc (I'm not) or whether some residual illness is happening on it's own without gluten CC.

Check, check and triple check the ingredients of the beef jerky. I picked some up at the store and started reading the ingredients, thinking "surely I can have this.........." The jerky I was looking at was seasoned with teriyaki, and sure enough, contained gluten.

I checked Jack Link's, as well as a couple others (don't remember the other brands, sorry!).......so just be sure you're looking for all forms of possible wheat/gluten ingredients.

almost all jerky you dont get at a health store is going to have some nasty ingredients. every jerky brand at every grocery store i have been to in the past 6 months has that garbage in it - i had to get organic jerky, but man is it ever good!

also, you can make your own jerky, And msg is not always unrelated to celiac reaction.

ive read all over the place, most celiacs have a pretty noticeable reaction to MSG (including myself) - probably because its a blatantly bad food, and we have sensitive systems already, but maybe its just that most MSG-containing foods also have gluten or are processed on equipment that handles gluten (like progresso or lays). the only msg-containing-food i can handle is tomatoes or v8 juice.

in short: from MSG i get a reaction similar to gluten.

Are you sure there is no soy sauce in there? Most jerky has it. I have found a few brands that don't though.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
