DH and I are on vacation in Oregon, and tried a restaurant in Lincoln City (about 2 hours south of Portland). Upon telling the server dh is gluten free, he immediately told us dh wouldn't be able to have either soup, one is veggie barley, and the chowder may have rue made with flour. Our server was wonderful, and kept leading us correctly, we had a great meal and no glutening symptoms. We didn't even have to ask for no croutons on the salad, he knew, and made sure it was right. So if you are anywhere nearby, I highly recommend Kyllo's off Highway 110 in Lincoln City, OR.

Ok was the food itself any good?? I live about an 90 min from Lincoln City, so it would be nice to know. Lol. But the one time we went there (years ago, but I've heard this from others since then) that it was overpriced and not all that good...... If it's better now, it might be worth a try next time we have a beach day!

How are you liking Oregon?

Thank you! I'm going there next week! I'll tell them they got an advertisement here; I think it encourages restaurants to train their waiters.

Frec, let us know if it's any good, if it has improved in recent years, DH and I will just have to make a trip out to check it out too!

We've eaten there a few times. The food is good, just a little spendy. They have an amazing blackened salmon salad, but not sure about it being gluten-free. If you like salmon, you should ask about it, YUMM-O!!

Sorry, I was so excited that the food was safe for my dh, I forgot to mention it was really good too! He had a fish dish (sorry, I can't remember which) and said it was really good. I had not gluten-free food, which was excellent! We shared ice cream for dessert, and drank water, and spent $50, with a 25% tip, so not bad for a nice meal out. We really enjoyed Oregon, but were not able to get out for whale watching, the seas were just too high. Mostly dh enjoyed 'not working' as he's been working with 100% travel since the beginning of August. Anyhow, we're back home again, and the mountain of laundry's calling me :)

That's exciting!! Lincoln City is only about 1 hour-90 min (depending on the weather and traffic) away so I might just have to drag hubby up for a dinner one of these days! YAY!

      Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

      This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
