I'm not a picky eater. Even after cutting pork, alchohol, dairy, gluten, and corn out of my diet, there's still plenty to eat. Fruits, vegetables, eggs, beans, nuts, meat (mostly fish), rice... all these things are great.

So here's my question. Yesterday I was with a friend and I had a fruit smoothie. Before I ordered it, I checked to make sure there was no hidden gluten or dairy (score!). It was a Hawaiian Vacation Smoothie. Pineapple, mango, and coconut. :P YUM. So why did I feel like ripping the brownie out of my friend's hand? Ugh! Of course I didn't... but I spent a few minutes just coveting her food.

I only have corn syrup on rare occasions (evil stuff)... I don't even remember the last time I had it. I have eaten a few gluten-free muffins and cookies in the last few weeks, but nothing major. I was glutened a couple of weeks ago, but the symptoms cleared up in a few dayMy major treat is dark chocolate. Mmmmm... If there's one food I'm addicted to it's chocolate. I've also been eating a bit of pure maple syrup in my rice cereal in the morning. I have an uncle who likes to tap the trees in his yard and make his own maple syrup from scratch.

Anyway... all the stuff I've been reading about candida, leaky gut, diabetes, etc... has me a little worried. Am I being paranoid? How much sugar is too much?

I personally just dont do very well with much sugar anymore. I only get sugar from small amounts of fruit and the tsp of honey here and there.

Maybe you "coveted" her brownie because you are addicted to chocolate. :P

Had she been eating a blondie, maybe you would not have cared......

But seriously... what convinced you to cut back on sugar? And how did you do it?

Certain carbohydrates like grains and sugars spike my blood sugar. With diabetes on both sides of the family, I want to avoid that. I actually tested different carbs with my glucometer. It was pretty clear anytime I ate anything with sugar, it spiked. I just stopped eating it. I wasnt eating much anyway. Over the years I had cut back because it was "unhealthy" according to all of my research.

I cut back on sugar because my blood sugar's always on the high end of normal. I just stopped eating all sweets except the occasional dark chocolate (and the two bags of Hallowe'en candy :ph34r: ). My sugar comes only from fruit for 90% of my diet, and not much of that. I try to drink herbal teas to quench the cravings.

Oh yeah... licorice tea is supposed to be good for sugar cravings. I just couldn't drink it while I was pregnant.

I'm going to make myself a cup tonight!

Testing my blood sugar is an interesting idea... diabetes runs in my family too. Can you get a device without a prescription? What kind of numbers are appropriate?

Yes, you can. Just order one online. The glucometers are cheap. But the test strips are pricey. Just so you know. It will come with a booklet that will tell you what to shoot for. I like my fasting to be below 90. Same for 2 hours after eating.

Another good way to stop cravings is to eat something high-fat, something natural and healthy. I don't know what your sensitivities/intolerances/allergies are, but perhaps some nuts, an avocado, a piece of cheese, etc. Fat is more satiating than carbs, and is slower to digest, thus making you feel more satisfied.

So what is your body telling you when it is craving sugar and carb. Like right now I am craving pancakes with lots of butter and syrup but I and not going to make them instead I am eating some cinnamon crisps I bought from and local gluten free bakery. I go through times whe I crave peanut butter and a spoon lol. I really want to eat healthier I just need to know what my body is trying to tell me. Since I have gone gluten free I have lost 45 lbs yippe and am feeling better but I know I have a ways to go. So any help would be much appreciated.

I used to eat quite a bit of cheese, but I had to give it up so I could keep breastfeeding my casein-intolerant son. Maybe I would feel satisfied if I ate a little more fat... looks like I need to go buy some nuts and some licorice tea :P I love avocados too, but it's hard to find good ones at this time of year in the Midwest.

With sugar I get gluten-like tummy issues, a tongue that feels burnt, and cystic acne..........not fun. And this includes fruit and the more-than-the-occassional rice products.

I miss fruit most of all :( .......and ice-cream........and.... . . . .

      Thank you both for your input! trents: yes I completely agree, it's simple anatomy. The walk-in doctor I saw even said to me, "you cannot get exposure or get sick if it only got in your respiratory system" to which I replied, "If I inhaled it, it's in the mucous I swallow that leads to my gut." I was honestly baffled I had to explain that to her. Thanks for your comments! Scott Adams: Thanks for your advice, yes I agree I think that's ultimately what I have to do especially while times are getting tougher in this current economy! Hopefully I find something new and equitable or better, in a quick manner! Please send prayers and best wishes for me to find a new job quickly, I wore the N95 masks today and it seems like I'm gonna be okay but I literally have to hazmat wash my clothes and myself when I get home. I think my current exposure will have time to recover while I'm wearing the masks at work. Thank you all again!

      Parent-to-parent, I hear your exhaustion and worry loud and clear – what you’re describing goes far beyond typical toddler troubles. Your daughter’s screaming night pain, terrible bloating, stalled growth, and constant infections are textbook red flags for celiac disease or another serious gluten-related condition. While her blood test came back negative, there are critical reasons not to rule it out yet. First, celiac tests are notoriously unreliable in kids under 3 – their tiny immune systems often don’t produce enough antibodies to register on standard blood work, especially if she wasn’t eating consistent gluten beforehand (which you mentioned was a struggle). Her iron deficiency alone is a glaring clue, as it’s one of the most common signs of undiagnosed celiac in little ones. The fact that she’s already dairy/soy-free yet still suffering suggests something bigger is at play. It could still be celiac (a pediatric GI should consider an endoscopy with biopsies, the gold standard for diagnosis), or possibly non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) – which doesn’t show up on tests but can cause identical agony. Her recurring mouth ulcers and infections also hint at the immune dysfunction seen in celiac. Until you see the specialist, I’d quietly start a gluten-free trial (after documenting her current symptoms carefully with photos/videos of the bloating and pain episodes). If you see improvement in 3-4 weeks, that’s powerful evidence to bring to the doctors. You’re not being dramatic – you’re being the exact advocate your daughter needs. If the pediatrician brushes you off, look them in the eye and say: “What else could explain ALL these symptoms together? If it’s not celiac, what’s our next step to stop her suffering?” Keep pushing – moms’ instincts are rarely wrong about this stuff. For now, focus on small wins: snap daily pics of her belly to show the distension, ask for a fecal calprotectin test (checks gut inflammation), and know this internet stranger is rooting for you both. She’s lucky to have you fighting for her.

      So I have been going threw celiac testing for some time unfortunately I had been 1 year gluten free Wen I had the blood test do came back negative I had other blood tests done my calprotein came in very high and my crp was elevated have been sent to gastroenterology she has put me in for a colonoscopy wat I can't understand it says take 2 tablets  6 days before of  senna for 5 day before my plenvu prep which I start tomorrow yet it says if ibd colitis crone's or others are present don't take the senna but I don't know if I have these yet my brother tho has the same symptoms has just be diagnosed with colitis and didn't take the senna can anyone shed light on this for me  has I  start the prep tomorrow I already have very loose bowels seems a lot to go threw for 6 days ? I'm new to all this do I'm just a little confused here ant help round be appriciated 🙏 also I'm so anxious wat to expect with the colonoscopy has anyone got any advise thanks in advance 🤗

      Can you post what blood tests were done specifically for celiac disease, the results and reference ranges if available? If her gluten intake was reduced prior to the blood draw it certainly could result in false negatives on some tests. There is also the possibility that she has NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).
