Millet Or Related Disorder?

Hey everyone...

I've been gluten free for a few years. One of the great things that happened when I first went off wheat/gluten was that I started getting my period (after many years of not getting it since the age of 12). I actually got it within weeks of going gluten free so I knew instanty that there was a connection b/w the amenorrhea and gluten.

After a while the periods stopped again and I wasn't feeling so good. I checked my diet and there was no wheat in it. I was disappointed and thought that maybe I could just have a related disorder.

Then I started thinking that maybe my periods would only come when I barely ate anything and thought that perhaps I have a related disorder like Addison's. It seemed that whenever I barely ate anything my periods would come...

Well recently the periods returned. The only thing I've changed is that I stopped eating millet bread and switched it to a flax bread which is also gluten free. This got me really thinking that maybe I'm also reacting to millet. Anyone think this is possible, or is it all a coincidence? Thoughts?

I have heard that millet plays havoc on the thyroid.

Your millet bread may have been contaminated with gluten. Was it made in a bakery that also makes wheat products?

What was the brand name of the millet bread? Several brands have been shown to have astronomical levels of gluten contamination.

Thanks for replying guys....It's called El Peto bread. I was eating the stuff every single day. Unbelievable. In addition to the return of my periods, my skin also looks much better.

I'm thinking of going on an elimination diet to identify problem foods. Anyone know of any good ones? I'm pretty sure that the Millet bread was the trigger, but there could be other problems. I was seriously thinking that the only way to get my period was via starvation...I'll be really happy if it's just the Millet bread so that I can actually eat rice and other things!

I must be very sensitive to gluten for it to make my period stop....and now add Millet to the list!

Someone at church brought this issue up. If you put millet and thyroid into the same search engine search, you will find all sorts of information regarding what millet can do to the thyroid.

If you're still having problems, a good basic diet is the SCD. There are lots of threads about it on this forum... look in the "leaky gut and related disorders" section. You can also go to this website: www.pecanbread.com or read "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." Basically, the goal of the SCD is to give your digestive system a break so your body can heal. It's a lot healthier than starvation! ;) After a while you can add other foods back in to see how they affect you.

Yes you can have reactions to millet. This is being discussed in the nephrotic syndrome thread.

Welcome to the  forum @maylynn! Have you had a follow-up endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel to check for healing of the villous lining? If not, it's about time one was done. As Scott mentioned, I also wonder if you have food intolerances in addition to gluten. Oats (even gluten free oats), dairy, soy, corn and eggs are some of the most common ones in the celiac community.

Is your gluten-free diet strict? Do you eat out in restaurants? If so, you could be getting contamination, and over time that can slow recovery. You may want to get a follow up celiac disease antibody panel done to make sure that your levels have gone down since your last tests. Also, have you had various nutrient levels checked via a blood test, and have you been taking vitamin & mineral supplements since your diagnosis?  The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.    Do you still have celiac disease symptoms?  Many people with celiac...

Hello!  I am here as a last result, hoping for some advice, similar stories, etc. When I was 17, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. By the time we figured it out my iron levels were so low I had to get infusions, and I had lost 20lbs. in two weeks going from a 5'11 130lbs woman to a 110 lbs. Now, I am 21 and have gained 4 lbs since. Every time I eat a meal, I get three bites in and feel so full that I feel sick. I can't eat a full meal. Something else has to be wrong right? This can't just be more "normal" right? I have done test after test and no doctor in my area can figure anything else out. They have told me I most likely have shrunken my stomach by now with how little I am eating so that has to do...

Thank you so much, Scott. I find it incredibly daunting navigating this celiac space and I find comfort in your wealth of knowledge. Thank you 🙏🏻

I am not sure about that brand specifically, but this article may be helpful:
