When Is The Anxiety Going To Go, And The Brain Fog?

ive been gluten free (pretty sure, unless meijer yogurt has gluten) for 3 days now. im starting to feel a little better and energetic, and less paranoid. but i want to know how long until the symptoms go away, mostly the brain fog and anxiety? could i still take a clonopin? do they have gluten? thanks.

also i have heard some nasty rumors that once i get off gluten, i could become intolerant to other food? i want to not believe this.

The clonopin and any other drug or supplement you take needs to be checked. With script drugs your pharmacist should be able to check or you can ask for the info sheet that comes with the drug and call the maker yourself. You should NOT stop taking any prescription drugs that you need on a daily basis without checking with your doctor first. This applies even if that drug has gluten. If it does call your doctor or have the pharm call and get a safe replacement.

For the brain fog issue something that many find helpful is sublingual B12. Make sure it is gluten free and sublingual (dissolves under the tongue).

Not everyone becomes intolerant to other foods when they drop gluten. However many do need to stop or restrict dairy at first. The same villi that are damaged by gluten produce the enzyme that we need to digest dairy. Some can tolerate hard cheeses and yogurt but not soft cheeses like mozzarella or a glass of milk. Yoplait yogurt has many if not all flavors gluten free. I don't know about the brand you spoke of but if you have the container it should have a phone number on it where you can call and ask.

ok here's how i feel: it's m 3rd day: i feel extremely emotional for some reason. noises seem very loud and lights brighter. i have a weird headache. you have no idea how much i want to eat just a little cracker! but i mostly want to eat globs and globs of bread dough. i actually want to cry. my brain fog is bad sometimes i feel like my brain is asleep or that everything is a dream. is IT SUPPOSED TO BE THIS INTENSE?! god i just want it to go away so i can be with people and not freak out. please help... :(

Within 2 weeks my brain fog was gone. The first week I felt terrible. As for clonapin I take it and it is gluten free. But it can make you have brain fog so take as little as you can. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. And remember to eat your meats with marinades unless you know it is gluten free. I have only been gluten free is Oct 15th and I almost feel human!! My anxiety has gone away. I remember the first 2 weeks I had trouble sleeping but that went away. Good luck to you.

No that is not selfish. It does sound like you are going through withdrawl. A lot of what you mentioned in the previous post should go away soon as long as you don't get reglutened. The intensity of your withdrawl means you were being seriously effected brainwise, IMHO. You will have a day soon when it will lift. Until then hang in there.

The anxiety seems to be the first thing to come and the last thing to go when I get accidentally glutened, even after gluten free for a year. That, and the irritability. It is much better now though. Hang in there and be very careful about what you eat.

I was in a deep fog when diagnosed.....sleeping up to 18 hours a day. Suicidal anxiety also.

Within six days I sort of sprang to life and felt human for the first time in soooooooo long. Then I plummeted - it was very up and down in the first year.

Give it time! Take half a Klonepin if you must - the namebrand and the generic are gluten-free. If you want a cracker.....do you have a Trader Joe's nearby? I eat their Savory Thins all the time. For bread - - Whole Foods has some VERY expensive options that I use as a treat now and then - the white sandwich bread toasted wtih butter and honey is not bad at all!

You're not being selfish to want to feel normal and not have this anxiety! Just be gentle with yourslef, maybe try and do something that distracts you like get into a good, easy book or a movie that takes you away from everything.

Hang on! It gets better! :)

I am a retired medical worker, I have Celiac myself, and I do a lot of online research. I recently made an interesting discovery. I was doing very much what you are, but using my skills online to research everything, as well.

I found that Celiac disease causes symptoms of Beri-beri, which is caused by a deficiency of the vitamin, Thiamin. Those symptoms can be extremely serious, and can cause neurological and cardiac damage, as well as wreaking havoc with all your systems. Go look it up. It is a very dangerous deficiency, which many doctors treating Celiac patients are not even aware of.

I decided to try treating myself with Thiamin, which is water soluble and will not be toxic. Within two days of starting treatment, my cardiac symptoms vanished, and they had been severe. It is now 5 months later, and I have the support of my physician for this treatment. I have been getting steadily better from all my symptoms, including emotional ones. My only problem is that I have no way to get this information to others, so they can be helped, as well. That is why I am sharing it in this way.

well i take this super b complex which has more than enough of that vitamin. and if seems like you can get that disease only if you don't eat certain foods and im being more sure of what i eat, except when it's at someones house i get worried that a crouton or a knife will get bread crumbs hidden in my food...

if i keep gluten free the problems should go away anyways right? how strict should i be? and why should i avoid gravy?

You need to avoid gravy because it is usually made with wheat flour. Also the super B complex are going to be good BUT you do need to also get a seperate sublingual B12. Your body isn't going to be able to use this vitamin from one that you swallow. The sublingual will dissolve and be absorbed through the membranes in your mouth. It really will make a difference. As far as the previous poster and the concerns that were mentioned if you have celiac your body is not going to be absorbing much until you heal. It is very common for us to have severe vitamin and mineral defiecencies even if we are eating a good diet.

Mr Moore, It sounds like you need the "Safe" and "Unsafe" food lists that are available on this site. You need to be very serious in educating yourself on "gluten free." I say this because of your question on the gravy. You will find that once you are gluten free, if you eat it accidently, you may have quicker and more severe symptoms. You may have a hard time with soy too. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but learn to pay attention to your body telling you it can not have certain things for awhile. And, Never will you be able to eat gluten again unless you want to be sick and develop auto-immune diseases and even cancer. Don't play around with it. That is how strick you need to be.

Dear Mr. Moore,

You state that your B complex has "more than enough" of Thiamin for your needs. I must differ. Your body has probably been running at a serious deficit of Thiamin for at least several years. Long enough to be giving you quite severe symptoms. Your intestinal villi have been damaged by Celiac disease, so you do not absorb nutrients like Thiamin very well, if at all. In order to replenish your depleted stores of Thiamin, which is necessary for your entire body to work correctly, you must be taking in enough to flood your tissues, and facilitate healing.

Celiac disease is an extremely serious process, and should not be taken lightly. It is unfortunate that so many people view it as one of the "allergic" disorders, and easily curable. True, if you stop eating wheat, you will eventually get better, but so much damage may have occurred that it could be years before your intestines are normal again. During that entire time, between 2 and 5 years, you will still not be absorbing nutrients properly and you will need to continue flooding your system with Thiamin, just to have enough available for survival. This will enable faster healing, and a quicker return to "normal".

A Thiamin deficiency affects your nervous system very powerfully, and anxiety is a symptom of nervous system damage. I have found that 100 mg per day is sufficient to provide enough Thiamin to correct most of the nervous system issues. Please remember, I am not promoting anything here, nor am I trying to convince you of anything. I am merely sharing my experience with you, and hoping to help aid your recovery. Because of what I discovered, my own return to FEELING normal has been rapid. But I am aware that I still have several years of impaired absorption ahead of me, during which I will have to supplement my diet very carefully, just to continue feeling good as I do.

It is my hope that the medical mainstream discovers this, and begins appropriate treatment protocols for their patients who have this insidious condition, which has damaged so many people. It frightens me that we can know so much, and yet so many people must continue to suffer through years of misdiagnoses, and bad medicine. It's so sad, to have so many doctors, and to still be on our own, as if there were no doctors. That is very hard to swallow.

You should avoid gravy because most commercially produced gravies, and restaurant gravies are made using wheat flour as a thickener. There also is often wheat starch in things like mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, and other places you would not expect to see it. You should be very strict! I recently ran out of cigarettes (yes, I smoke) and had to roll a few by hand. I used regular cigarette papers, which are glued with wheat paste glue, which I did not know. Just from licking the glue on those papers, I got sick for two weeks, so do be very strict. It's in your best interest.

If I understand correctly, the sublingual is the liquid that you put under your tongue. Sounds like you got the right one. I personally brake out terribly with any kind of B 12. It appears I am one of the rare ones with an allergy to the supplements. (even gluten free) I am adding more foods now with the B vitamins. This is the only way for me I guess.

let me tell you what i bought today:

one is called 'Total B liquid sublingual"

it has all the B's i need, except for that very high does grannny suggested, it only has 3mg. that high of level sounds toxic anyways.

the other one i bought is called "sublingual B 12 5000 mcg Meijer"

this one is NOT a liquid but kind of like a tablet you put under your tounge and it sort of just dissolves. its very small, and kind of makes me wonder if it'll help. which is more important anyways, the B1 or B12 for us?

The sublingual B12 is the one that is going to help the most. With the B12 do not worry about the high level in the tablet. B12 is a vitamin that has no toxic level. You body will simply pee out any that it does not need. I think you will notice a difference within a fairly short time.

i think i feel something im not sure what lol, but it is something. im gonna buy the B1 tablets, but they're not the dissolving kind so im not sure if id be wasting my money or not...

I don't think you are wasting your money. I think they will both help. Let us know.

My advice is to read all the information you can, and there are many helpful articles on this web site as well as others. Educate yourself on your condition and you will be armed with all you need to get well. If you have celiac or gluten intolerance, you should see remarkable improvements over time. You will become even more sensitive to it and will know pretty quickly when you have accidently eaten it. There are great sites thru google on vitamins too. (as to whether they are toxic, etc.) Just make sure the supplements are gluten free as well as any other drugs.

After having a gluten incident with odd effects, see my post about Sami's pizza in the products section I read this thread and decided to try the B12.

Short story is I ate Sami's pizza crust which must have had gluten and I initially had great results from it. I was taking Benadryl for a cold and odd as it sounds I had zero reaction from the Sami's....then I got over my cold and stopped taking Benadryl and my gluten responses showed up.

But they were not strong, they were how they would be normally 2-3 days after the fact which was odd. I had anxiety when I woke up this morning. I don't let it bother me since I know why its happening it doesn't do a whole lot to effect things day to day.

I tried the B12 though and everything relaxed in a few hours. My mind settled out, my muscle tension went away...not sure how fast this metabolizes but I've been through this enough to know I was a good 3-4 more days away from feeling normal and tonight I feel great.

Thanks for the suggestion, be interesting to see how it effects things next time around.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

      Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.
