Sylvan Street Grille (salisbury And Danvers, Ma) And Old Salt (hampton, Nh)

Hey all,

I was browsing the Sylvan Street Grille web site the other night and noticed they have an allergy list for all their menu items. Even better, it had fries listed as gluten-free. So I called and spoke with the chef that was working and he confirmed that they do have a dedicated friolator for the fries and that they also are educated on cross contamination/preparing the gluten-free items. He said that the kitchen staff know to change gloves etc. when handling your food and if you tell the waiter they will take every precaution necessary.

So I had to check it out, went Saturday night to the Salisbury, MA location, had some fries and baby back ribs, didn't feel sick at all (always a good sign lol), and the food was excellent. My waitress was a bit confused at first, but she went out back to talk to the cooks and came back and I felt a bit better that she understood.

Also, when I first walked in I asked them for a gluten-free menu etc. and they brought out the same allergen list that they have online, so they don't have a gluten-free menu, but they were knowledgeable enough to get the list.

Anyways, just a heads up to anyone in the area looking for a new dining experience that they've been missing (and another place to get fries) :-)

On a side note, there's another place nearby in Hampton called Old Salt that I got a gift certificate to for XMAS, and although there's not much on the menu for gluten-free, the chef was very informed about Celiacs (his mother has it) and was very nice in coming up with some suggestions for dinner. He said the kitchen staff was all knowledgeable about it as well and knew how to take the necessary precautions.

I went there the next night, got a nice steak and baked potato, and also got really sick about 20 minutes after we left...so although this place sounded on the up and up with Celiacs, something definitley made me really sick for the rest of the night, which sucked cause it was the last night I had some friends home from the holidays visiting my place...oh well.

They have an omlette bar for their Sunday brunch and I am planning on trying that soon because it would seem to be very hard to mess up an omlette since the skillet is only being used for the omlette station, but we will see, I hope my future experiences there are better. But anyways, if you live in the area I would suggest calling Old Salt and seeing if they can accomodate, maybe you'll have a better experience than me.

What is the best gluten free scanner app? I have the "gluten-free Scanner" app. I scanned an almond joy and it says it contains gluten when the package is labeled gluten free

Certainly, it would b wise to have a gene test done if your physician is open to it as it would provide some more data to understand what's going on. But keep in mind that the genetic test for celiac disease cannot be used as to diagnose celiac disease, only to establish the potential to develop active celiac disease. About 40% of the general population possess one or both of the primary genes known to be associated with the development of active celiac disease but only about 1% of the population actually develop active celiac disease. So, the gene test is an effective "rule out" tool but not an effective diagnostic tool.

Had Quaker gluten-free oatmeal last night and my stomach is a mess today. NO flu but def stomach stuff. Anyone else?

So you would be good with the diagnosis and not worry to check genetics etc etc? Appreciate your words!
