This morning on a very popular morning show there was a guy talking about his new restaurant. The DJ said anyone who had questions could call.

I called and asked if he was planning on offering gluten-free food and said that he should so that Celiacs can frequent his restaurant. I told him the food sounded wonderful and I would love to visit his restaurant if there was something there I could eat.

The DJ's (Beth and Bill in Phoenix) started asking me about Celiac Disease and how happy I was to answer their questions! They asked me how many people have it, what are symptoms, and of course they thought it was only wheat, barley, rye, and spelt...they didn't realize it could be in modified food starch, artificial flavors, etc.

It was only a 2 minute call but hopefully I got a little word out in Phoenix. Beth and Bill are the most popular morning show in the valley, so here's hoping!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
