Testing

Hello,

My name is Amy. It's recently come to my attention that my Grandmother, on my moms' side, has Celiac disease. My mom has a lot of the symptoms of the disease also. In doing my own research on the subject I found that it is hereditary. I told my mom to ask her doctor to perform the screening test on her, she said he didn't feel it necessary. My question is, does anyone know if I can buy a home test kit at a store?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Amy,

Unfortunately, I don't' believe there is an over the counter test for Celiac Disease. You are correct, your mother needs Celiac Blood Panel ordered by her doctor. I don't understand why her doctors found it unnecessary. I thought doctors were available to help people.

If testing is not an option for your mother, she could try the diet for several weeks to see if her symptoms improve.

Your mom might want to find a different doctor, if she can (or was it your mother who didn't think the test was necessary? I couldn't tell). Also, she can try going gluten-free to see if it helps, but if she wants to be tested, she'll have to still be eating gluten, or the test will return a false negative.

There is a home test kit in Canada called Biocard. It is Canada only though.

There is also Enterolab testing. They do stool testing to look for antibodies that your body will form to gluten. They DO NOT diagnose celiac disease but they can tell you if you are making antibodies to it.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
