I'm from white rock, I take the ferry over pretty often. A whole bunch of my friends are going to uvic, so if I'm ever going over I'll let you know ;)

I'm from Fort Nelson here, but planning on going to cumberland for the big music fest. If you make it up island, I'll buy us a rum and coke(we're allowed B)

Hi! In 85..wow. How old are you now?

I remember a gluten free grocery store in Victoria between London drugs and Market on Yates? Is it still there?

Hi, thanks! That sounds really nice but, I probably won't make it up there though. I hope you have a good time!

Hi Patrick, in 69 years have you found you have a problem with other grains as well as gluten grains?

:D:)

Not really have not experimented with exotic grains, grains from Asia are questionable.

I practise zero tolerance best I can,but get flare-ups with foods in restaurants the odd time.

Reading labels is a challenge as to ingredients as well.

I stick to brown rice flour mostly.

Some countries like Australia consider 20ppm ok as safe for celiacs, however one of the flour millers I spoke to in Ontario recently strive for 5ppm.

As you know reactions are very diferentwith some celiacs.

Look up Planet Organic. Great place. They have a celiac tour every month from the president of the Vancouver Island Celiac Association. It is an awesome place to shop, very helpful staff.

I'm from the Comox valley. I seem to meet Celiacs everywhere now that I am diagnosed. It would be cool if there were enough of us to organize some kind of gluten-free meet up. :)

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
