I wanted to let you know about the date of the yearly GI Health gluten-free seminar this year.

Oct 17, 09 from 9-2 at the Marriott North in Cranberry Twp.... It is a free event with guest speakers: Jules SHepard & Connie Sarros plus others. Vendors also will be available for sampling & purchasing.

You must pre-register & it is limited to 300 attendees.

This is a good event for newbies. There is also a good support group for this area .. if anyone wants more info , let me know!

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I will be away at that time. Is there a website with information about this annual event?

Do you know of doctors and/or nutritionists in the Pittsburgh area with special interest in Celiac disease?

Yes, Three Rivers Endo Group in Moon Twp & also Cranberry Twp. Dr. Stanley is good.412-262-1000. The nurse is a celiac.

Where are you located? The support group in Butler has people attending from S Hills,N.Hills & etc.

This is only the third seminar so it is fairly new...I'm a mentor for celiac in this area.

I'm from the other end of the state but here are my suggestions. Contact Abington Hospital & ask their referral service. Another hospital would be Paoli..... the last suggestions is contacting the CSA from that area (Philly) & asking them....

Hi Lady C

The seminar is OCt 17 (412-262-1000 )to register for that. Speakers are Connie Sarros from Ohio, Jules Shepard of Nearly Normal FLour, & a few others. Vendors about 23 total will also be available for sampling & selling their gluten-free goodies....

This is the only event in this area

Our Butler meetings are on hold at present ..... the church we use is being re-modeled so we have no other place to meet. We are staying in contact & doing the mini co-op gluten-free food ordering ......we just had a gluten-free dining experience with the group from Canton, ohio.

We are hoping the church will be finished so we can meet in Nov but I'm not sure ... it is not my church so I'll just have to play the waiting game! I should know for sure by end of October so check back at that time with me......

I fI can help you with anything just ask, you alos can pm me anytime.

Do you know of doctors and/or nutritionists in the Pittsburgh area with special interest in Celiac disease?

Doctor Richard Raizman, in Monroeville, PA diagnosed me with Celiac Sprue back in 1986, before anyone had really heard of it. I attribute him to saving my life, without his knowledge of the disease, I have no doubt in my mind that I would have basically starved to death.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
