For Those Of You With Other Food Allergies

I know a lot of you are allergic to other foods and I'm wondering if the main symptoms of those foods are gastro issues or something else?

My soy intolerance is the most annoying for me, even more so than the celiac as so much gluten free food has soy. My soy symptoms do differ from gluten. Both cause GI issues but soy gives me severe constipation with gluten I get very painful diarhea instead. Soy also cause more bone pain. I dont' get the neuro symptoms from soy that I get from gluten though.

For me it is a variety of symptoms.

Caffeine--extreme tachycardia and insomnia.

Lactose--gastro

Corn--gastro

Soy--extreme itching with red rash

Potatoes--hives and extreme itching

Green peppers--gastro

Remaining nightshades--avoid on principle and because of RA

Citric acid--blotchy red itching areas

glutenfreejenny Apprentice

corn- gastro, foggy mind

soy- gastro, foggy mind, red rash, fever

tomatoes- light stomach pain

gluten- ALL symptoms associated with celiac disease

for me the big difference is if it's an allergy I get REALLY hungry and it goes away within hours. With gluten it's 3 days of barely eating and no hunger at all.

Jestgar Rising Star

Rye - asthma

uncooked wheat - asthma, headache

cooked gluten - headache, brain fog, some tummy pain

soy - tummy pain, gastro

corn - joint pain 3 days later

peaches - throat swells shut

mold - massive headache if too much, nothing if just a little

sulfites - major gastro if to much, minimal if just a little

something? - heart races

something else? - digestive system immediately empties itself of everything.

I think the last two are chemical additives that I rarely encounter, and so haven't pinned them down.

Corn gives me extremely painful bloat and constipation. I will literally look 6 months pregnant and it hurts SO bad.

ksymonds84 Enthusiast

soy- gastro, rosacea bumps, and arthritis pain

gluten- brain fog, gastro

strawberries, pineapple, citrus-itchy rash on tongue (like geographical tongue but hurts and itches)

Thanks for the replies. I don't have any gastro symptoms associated with Celiac. All of my symptoms are neurological and its so frustrating. I was sick for months thinking I was going crazy. I had the following weird symptoms

1) Brain Fog- just felt weird all the time like I was on drugs

2) Ratchet Neck- When I move my head up and down my neck would literally ratchet (jerky motion)

3) Tired all the time

4) Anxiety and Depression

When I went Gluten free the brain fog and neck thing went away in a couple of days but now 5 months later I have the following symptoms

1) Weird feeling in the back and top of my head. Feels like pressure or someone holding my head down. Feels really weird and it freaks me out

2) Anxiety from issue # 1

3) still tired but I think its improving

Anyone think that any of my current symptoms could be related to food or maybe cross contamination? I'm really careful about what I eat but I do eat out everyday for lunch but I only eat supposedly gluten free meals and try to go to places knowledgeable about it.

It's so frustrating to still have problems like this 6 months after going gluten-free. I sometimes wonder if I'll ever feel like I did before. I'm supposed to be in my prime (31) but it just sucks feeling anxious and weird all the time.

You could try cutting out the other big allergens (soy, corn, milk, eggs) one at a time and see if it gets better. I would suggest starting with whichever of those you eat the most of.

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
