Iodine & Dermatitis Herpetiformis

Long story short, I saw an Oral Surgeon Monday about a molar that split.. All 4 molars came in with the enamel missing in the center of the teeth (when I was 6)... I'm sure it was undiagnosed Celiac... When I filled out the Medical History sheet, I didn't give Iodine a thought as an allergic to.....

My question is if one has Dermatitis Herpetiformis, are they allergic to Iodine?

Dr. Peter H.R. Green's book discusses Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) and sensitivity to Iodine in the chapter on DH (p. 130-131). Quote from Dr. Green's book: "It is unclear what the mechanism of this relationship is, but we do know that people who have dermatitis herpetiformis also appear to be sensitive to iodine. Often the DH will not improve -and flare-ups may occur- unless iodine is minimized or eliminated from the diet. This includes iodized salt or salty foods...and different forms of seafood..."

My personal experience is with my husband. He'd been gluten-free but experiencing flare-ups with his eczema. It was because we were eating salmon at least once a week for the Omega-3 benefits. Once he stopped eating salmon or any other seafood, those flare-ups went away.

Good luck with your dental work!

I would let them know you can't have iodine when you go back in but it is doubtful that he will be using anything with iodine in your mouth. Do have them check and make sure the products they do use will be gluten-free though. The only things I have had issues with at the dentist is the numbing get that they use before the novacaine and the flavors for the tooth polish but I don't know if other products might be an issue. My new dentist checks everything and for the first time in years I can get dental work done and not get sick afterwards.

I hope they are able to fix that tooth for you or that the extraction isn't too bad. I am in the middle of some real extensive work and I know it is no fun.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
