Went To Emergency Room

Last night we took my mom to Golden Corral to have New Year's dinner. I knew better but no I went. And stupid me I tried to eat right but. I had a grilled steak that we asked the cook to clean the grill where he cooked it. He cleaned the grill so I felt great with that with a salad and ranch dressing, just lettuce, eggs, carrots and shredded chese. Then broccoli with velveeta cheese, and mashed sweet potatoes.

Now, I did take a taste, just a taste of the A1 steak sauce

Everything felt fine, last night was great.

Anyway, this morning woke up with a little chest discomfort, nothing major, then the next couple of hours pain started around the left side just under the breast. Got so bad I couldn't breathe, radiating pain into the back of my shoulder. Wound up the whole left side with sharp pain. I just knew I was having a heart attack. There were no burning sensations, no heartburn. Had a dizzy spell, had nausea.

Finally got to the point I said lets go to the ER. They ran all type of tests. EKG was fine, Blood Pressure was fine. No food poisoning. Gallbladder was ok. They even took a chest Xray to make sure I didn't have a blood clot in my lung. Ok, No chest cold or brochitis.

The Dr knew about Celiac and when I told him my gluten free status, he shook his head asked me what I ate last night, then told me I either got CC'd or got glutened. He gave me aome liquid mylanta and some pepcid in an IV and told me to go home ad go to bed. He wanted to give me morphine for the pain but I said no, I'll take some lortabs when I get home. Wow, I was shocked, I didn't expect a Dr to understand about my gluten problem.

Anyway, I'm headed for the bed, but I thought I would give you guys an update. This is the first time I have ever had a gluten symptom like this. Believe me I hope I don't have it again. No more going out to eat again. I know, I know, I should've know better, but one good thing about this experience is that the sweetie now understands how bad gluten is. The Dr explained to him that I had to be more careful from now on.

Glad it wasn't anything with your heart. I had bad mid chest pain that radiated to my back about a year ago all from something I didn't verify. My husband was the one who told me to take some zantac to see if it would help. I reluctlanty did and It started to go away and I started burping. I thought it was my heart also and was ready to go to the er if the zantac hadn't helped. It can be really scary. Hope you feel better soon!

Oh my goodness, I know exactly what you're talking about. There have been a few times when I literally felt like I was having a heart attack and was going to die. The first time occurred when I was taking a nap. I woke up to the most painful sensation in my chest. The pain was so great I could hardly breath and I started turning blue and couldn't speak because of the pain. After having this occur several times I realized it was an allergic reaction to eggs.

txplowgirl,

Some ER doctors also have their own medical practice. If you post the name of that ER doctor you saw under the Doctors forum along with his town and state others in your area will be able to seek him out. At least if they end up in ER they could request to see him.

I've been to ER twice for this very same reason. No one has ever suggested it might be Celiac related. I'll have to keep this in mind the next time it happens. thanks

Am glad it worked out alright and that your doc. at emergency knew what was happening--wow! Was dramatic way to begin the New Year. Am glad your sweetie finally is getting it.

By the way, L-glutamine seems to really help as well as the usual enzymes bromelain/papain (or fresh pineapple and guava), probiotics and/or real unsweetened cultured yogurt, lemon in water (no sugar--can sweeten with stevia) and some doses of baking soda in water (away from the other stuff). Just recently I am finding green tea helps in addition too! Plus silica and marshmallow root for soothing and healing.

You are so lucky, not b/c of the ER trip, but b/c the dr was celiac savvy. Most of the doctors I have dealt with don't think gluten is the cause of anything unless it's strictly gastro. Even my gastro's office told me that sinus problems and/or headaches don't have anything to do with celiac. :(

Thanks everyone, it was definetly something I don't want to go through again. A question to those who have had this. When you woke up the next morning, was your chest sore? My chest feels like I hit it somehow. Very bruised feeling, especially when I touch it. I have felt really tired most of the day today. anyway, to Yolo, i'll be headed for the health food store tomorrow to get the L-glutamine and some enzymes. Thank you for the info.

I think holidays and birthdays are the most difficult for people with our condition due to eating out etc.

Hope your chest feels better soon. Were your lungs were affected too?

Yes, after I have the epsisodes my chest feels sore and painful. I'm usually a very active person but after an episode I'm useless and all I want to do is sleep. I've been able to figured out when the very first symptoms of the chest pain begins I immediatly get up and I'm able to deter it most times. I can even wake up from a dead sleep at the first sign of any issue. I hope you never go through that pain again.

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.
