Burning Stomach

My stomach has been feeling upset and like it is burning. (at least that is the best way I can think to describe it.) But it isn't heart burn-it is lower down right at the bottom of my diaphragm. It isn't helped by probiotics or tums. I think it was caused by the banana bread mix I made. There isn't any chance of CC unless it came in the mix, but it says it is gluten free. Has anyone experienced the same thing? What did you do to help? Thanks.

The mix sounds like a possibility - does the label state "gluten free" or are the ingredients just gluten-free? Does it mention whether it is produced in the same facility or production line as wheat?

Accidental glutenings are nearly impossible to avoid 100% - my reaction is pretty violent, but I do take digestive enzymes as soon as I bloat - 1st sign of gluten for me - this doesn't repair instantly, but I am usually back to normal by the next morning.

Good Luck!

Thanks.

The box specifically says it is gluten free, but does not say it is made in a dedicated facility or if they use the same equipment. Too bad the boxes of mix were Expensive! They shouldn't say that unless it really is gluten free! I hate food!!!!!

I am relatively new to learning about Celiac disease as my daughter was diagnosed with it in Dec. 09. I have been carefully monitoring her diet and lately keeping a food journal to help rule out foods that seem to be making her sick. She currently has a lot of gas, bloating, and indigestion and has for the past 3 days. She is taking Nexium twice a day and Zantac as needed. I would like to know more about digestive enzymes. I was reading about An-Pep and wondered if this is what you were referring to? Was this something prescribed by your doctor?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
