Mucous - When Does It End?

I have been gluten-free for about 6 months now and am still passing this stuff! I take that as a sign that my intestines are not fully healed yet. I am feeling quite a bit better -tons of symptoms seeming to be related to malnutrion are gone. I am assuming my intestines are partially healed, but not all the way? Anyone have any insight or links?

Have you eliminated dairy products yet? That's a major source of mucous - which you may already know ;) If so, please disregard this post and good luck finding out what's causing your troubles!

My GI told me that mucous is a sign of problems. It takes a year to heal most people, a recent stufy indicated.

Passing mucous in my stools is also a sign for me that I need to take my antihistamines. It means that my allergies are on the prowl.

From studying in another field, I have learned that when the body is experiencing allergies (food, pollen, anything) that the mucous membranes overproduce. Sounds obvious - snot runs if you get an allergic-causing item near your nose - but there are other mucous-related parts of your body besides your nose (such as breastmilk being produced by one of these....), and of course anything in your mouth/nose you can swallow and it could just pass through (like with a teething mucousy baby, you can often see the mucous in the stool...)

So in all likelihood, it just means your body is still in an allergic state (to gluten or something else).

This is sooo helpful! thank you all. I have a suspicion I am allergic to other things as well. I'll have to make an appointment with an allergist soon!

Thank you so much!! I've been having problem with mucus in stool for several days and was really concerned. I've never been able to figure it out when it happens and Never thought of the allergy connection. The pollens are horrible here at this time of year and I've had to be outside more than usual. Thanks again. granny

      I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

      Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

      Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.
