Wishbone Salad Dressings

Here's my reply from Wishbone salad dressings. Guess I'll cross them and basically Unilever foods off my list. I had thought Unilever had full disclosure but after reading this, who knows what barley may be lurking??

Hello Terri,

Thank you for writing.

We apologize that we are unable to provide you with a list of gluten free

products.

Because our products are formulated for use by the majority of our consumers,

and not specifically for those on restricted diets, it is possible our product

formulations may change at any time. As a result, we cannot provide a list due

to several factors:

- Lists of this type reflect products as formulated

at a specific time

- It is possible that more products/varieties may

have been added

- More important, changes in existing products may

have occurred

Ingredients that may contain any of the top eight allergens as defined by FDA

are:

Milk, Eggs, Fish, Shellfish & Crustacea,

Wheat, Soy, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Sesame Seeds, and Sulfites.

We make every effort to stay informed about any additional ingredients that

could be considered common allergens. Whenever possible, we try to avoid using

materials that could be considered to be commonly allergenic, so that potential

allergens are not included in categories such as "Natural Flavors."

We suggest reading all ingredient labels carefully. If you cannot determine

whether or not the product contains the ingredient in question, or if you feel

uncomfortable about the ingredients used in our products, it is our

recommendation that you do not use them.

We hope this information is helpful.

Your friends at Unilever Bestfoods

Subject: Salad Dressings

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with Celiac disease and wonder if any of your yummy salad

dressings are gluten free. Could you please let me know?

Thanks,

Terri

Those BASTARDS!!

Sorry Terri - we are simply too unique and exceptional ;)

Try Annie's Naturals dressings. They taste better anyway ;) Plus, most of them have "Gluten free" printed right on the bottle :)

Annie's Naturals are DA BOMB!!!!!! I love that they label which ones are gluten free so clearly on the label.

I refuse to support a company that so blatantly disregards the needs of this community. I am making a vow to only support those companies making an effort, like Kraft, Hormel, Amy's, Annie's Naturals, Con Agra, Nature's Path, Newman's Own, Seeds of Change, Ian's and so on, and then all those companies specifically making only gluten-free foods!

Thanks guys, Annies is wonderful and I found another Drews that says gluten free on the label. Of course, there's always homemade..... ;)

I've used only Annie's salad dressings for a while now... however what bothers me about this thread is that Unilever is on the list of companies that report every thing in their products, supposedly we could trust their labels. It makes me wonder who else is on that list and can't be trusted.

That was my thought exactly! And another thing that I wonder about is that these companies who say they list everything, do they mean they list everything that is a major allergen or everything they put in. Specifically barley worries me. It is in so many things and is not a major allergen and therefore may not be mentioned. Another that is iffy is vinegar, I wonder sometimes if it is malt vinegar which we can't have. My other concern is that many companies used corn in their starches, etc. and now people are up in arms over genetically modified corn and so many companies have switched to wheat instead. I found a block of Gheridelli (sp) chocolate and picked it up and it said "may contain gluten ingredients". Whereas I was delighted that they are on the up and up, I couldn't help wondering if they too, switched to wheat from corn... Just my thoughts...

Some campnies do indeed list everything (Kraft does) and others list just the top 8 allergens. Usually the companies make it clear but you should always ask for certain. Barley is indeed an occasional concern, but a whole lot less so than wheat.

I'm pretty certain that when it's malt vinegar it must say so, but even if that's not so, malth vinegar tastes very different and is more expensive. No need to worry.

Welcome to the  forum @maylynn! Have you had a follow-up endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel to check for healing of the villous lining? If not, it's about time one was done. As Scott mentioned, I also wonder if you have food intolerances in addition to gluten. Oats (even gluten free oats), dairy, soy, corn and eggs are some of the most common ones in the celiac community.

Is your gluten-free diet strict? Do you eat out in restaurants? If so, you could be getting contamination, and over time that can slow recovery. You may want to get a follow up celiac disease antibody panel done to make sure that your levels have gone down since your last tests. Also, have you had various nutrient levels checked via a blood test, and have you been taking vitamin & mineral supplements since your diagnosis?  The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.    Do you still have celiac disease symptoms?  Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. Hello!  I am here as a last result, hoping for some advice, similar stories, etc. When I was 17, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. By the time we figured it out my iron levels were so low I had to get infusions, and I had lost 20lbs. in two weeks going from a 5'11 130lbs woman to a 110 lbs. Now, I am 21 and have gained 4 lbs since. Every time I eat a meal, I get three bites in and feel so full that I feel sick. I can't eat a full meal. Something else has to be wrong right? This can't just be more "normal" right? I have done test after test and no doctor in my area can figure anything else out. They have told me I most likely have shrunken my stomach by now with how little I am eating so that has to do with some of the sick feeling. What have you done to gain the weight back? Foods? Workouts?

Thank you so much, Scott. I find it incredibly daunting navigating this celiac space and I find comfort in your wealth of knowledge. Thank you 🙏🏻
