Cheeseburger In Paradise

DH and I went to Cheeseburger in Paradise tonight, not intentionally to feed him (he'd already had dinner and I hadn't). It turns out that they have a pretty extensive gluten free menu, complete with alcoholic drink options. We were really impressed.

I had St. Bart's Citrus Chicken, and it was really, really good. They also have Blue Bell ice cream, long revered in the midwest US.

On the way out we saw a sign giving approval from the Gluten Intolerance Group on the door.

I'm glad you had a good experience. I've eaten there twice with mixed results. The first time we went was a week night and they were not very busy. The waitress listened intently to me and assured me she knew all about gluten-intolerance and celiac's disease. I got a burger without a bun and fries (This is the only sit-down place in town I have found with gluten-free fries so I was thrilled). When they brought out the entrees the server actually asked who had the gluten free meal. The manager came by to check on us and make sure everything was okay. I was thrilled by that first experience and more importantly I DID NOT get sick!

Unfortunately I can't say the same for my second visit. We went on a busy friday night. The waiter did not really listen. He was trying to get us to add cheese and bacon to the fries (I'm allergic to pork and lactose intolerent). I told him TWICE NO Cheese and Bacon. He nodded like he understood, but when we got the food the burger had cheese on it and the fries had cheese and bacon! As least I got the burger without a bun, but that was the only thing he got right. We were going someplace after dinner and starving and didn't want to wait to send the food back so my husband switched fries with me (He had plain fries) and I ate the burger with cheese. Sometimes cheese does not bother me or only causes mild bloating, but bacon would send me to the hospital. Unfortunately, when I tasted my husband's fries they tasted different from my first visit. They had some kind of seasoning on them which I don't remember from the first visit. I hadn't seen anything in the menu about having to special order the fries without seasoning, but I suspect either the fries or the cheese got me. Within only a few minutes of eating I had to go to the restroom. I was sick for the rest of the evening and we had to cancel our after dinner plans. I don't know if I will go back, but at least I learned my lesson not to go on a busy weekend. Had it not been for the plans after dinner I would have sent the food back.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
