Any Other Tall Celiacs Out There?

I couldn't find the best place to make this topic, so I put it into the health section. I am 6'2'' and remarkably continued to grow even though I was malnourished/anemic/had osteoperosis before being diagnosed with celiac disease! I was just wondering if there are any other tall celiacs that can relate because I always thought celiac could stunt your growth if not dealt with properly.

I haven't been officially diagnosed as Celiac but I am gluten intolerant and have had symptoms most of my life. BUT I am 5'10", have great teeth (no cavities) and as far as I know, no osteoperosis.

I'm 50 so this story goes back.

My parents who are now elderly have been unburdening themselves of the odd matter that they had kept to themselves or even just plain forgotten about, as is normal I'm sure.

My experience was that I was seriously emaciated, underweight and weak from age about 5 to well past 20, but never stopped putting on height and in fact was almost the tallest in the class bar one or two until most of the rest caught up with me at around age 16. I have been 6ft since about age 16, which would have been tall earlier in the century but is perhaps near average among my contemporaries.

Am now 15st due to middle age spread which further confuses doctors.

What my folks just told me is, they were almost in trouble because I was so emaciated. This was after coeliac disease was heard of but evidently insight hadn't spread.

I had lots of symptoms that later (but not very well known) science has associated with celiac disease-like conditions.

HTH :)

i wouldn't call myself tall but i'm around 5'9 now..but didn't really grow until i went on the diet.

darn... I wish I put on height after I went on the diet... 5"2' is tough to shop for - but hey, I can fit the cheaper childrens clothing. ;-)

Hey there! B)

Interesting topic! I'm 5'8" and have been thin my entire life. Of course, I fight multiple chronic disabilities...so I can't necessarily blame my blood probs. and thinness on celiac disease alone.

Hee hee...I was 5'6" by the end of elementary school with a whopping size nine foot. Doctors thought I would be closer to six feet, but I got sick and quit growing remarkably early.

Could be a blessing in disquise...I could be a giant! :P

I;m almost 5'7" and still growing tall because I am almost 15 and I grew about 7" since I was diagnosed w/ sleep apnea YAY!

I'm also almost 5"7 and I'm done growing.

Guest imsohungry

Hi Smith...I didn't mean that being tall means you are a giant (in any negative way)...Like you, I also appreciate my height. B)

Well, all you tall ladies and gents out there have a good day! -Julie ;)

I'm 6 feet and 2 inches.

I weigh around 230.

Everytime I go to a Celiac "event", people are suprised that I have Celiac. I guess some people think it can only happen to skinny folks (its not that I'm chubby - I'm just a corn-fed Ohio boy).

Guest vetnurse

I am 5'11" and 43 so I hope I don't get a growth spurt! :o

I wanted to be six feet tall. Was a goal. I had a size 10 shoe at the end of 6th grade. Still wear size 10 shoes. I met a second cousin of mine about 10 years ago and she wears size 12, for some reason I was envious of this!

Funny anyway, I guess there is no one way to look/be with gluten intolerance.

Hey all...thanks for the replies!

I guess our bodies are quite amazing if they are able to still grow with health problems. We are quite the diverse group of celiacs! My goal growing up was to be taller than my father and be 6'1'' but then I said the heck with that, might as well be 6'2''. I have size 12/13 feet too...

I'm 5'8" but I stopped growing a couple years before I was diagnosed so I don't know if celiac disease affected my growth that much. I have always been thin, but not underweight. My dad is really tall (6'6") so I think I reached my "natural" height.

I'm 5'9", and I am the shortest one in my family..... People used to call my dad an "ex-mountain", he's huge......

My daughter (who so far is not celiac) is only 11 and she is already 5'7" with a ladies size 9 foot!!!! I am still waiting for her growth to level off a bit...... Interestingly, my younger daughter who is 6 is the cutest, tiniest, petite little pixie you ever saw. Go figure, eh? Two children, same parents, opposite ends of the spectrum.....

I'm 5'8 -5'9ish, I guess that is kind of tall. I think I only developed celiac disease about two years ago (I'm 20 now), which was when I stopped growing. Its hard to tell if I stopped growing because of celiac or just because of my age.

nikki-uk Enthusiast

We suspect my dh has had celiac disease since childhood, always extremely thin, now at 6ft at 110 pounds.

Oddly enough most of his family are on the small side(one brother is only 5ft 4inches-no celiac disease)

It seems that children grow-even if they're malnourished-but I think you pay the price in your health in later years.

I was short--around 5'2"...since Feb. I've grown about 5 inches and gone from a size 8 shoe to 10 1/2. My GI says it's catch up growth. I should be over six feet tall.

VegasCeliacBuckeye Collaborator

I'm around 6'3 and 225 lbs.

I have to admit, I don't meet that many celiac disease's that are my size....

Generic Apprentice

I am 5'8", I think I would have been a lot taller. My dad is 6'6" and my mom is 5'1". I am glad my growth was stunted actually.

Guest gliX

I'm around 5'9 now

and definitely grew after going gluten-free

I'm 6'1" and I went through a huge growth spurt my junior and senior year in

High school. I still have knee and back pain! I think I developed Celiac a little bit later in life.

Misa Rookie

This is an interesting topic. Celiacs do come in all shapes and sizes.....

I'm 173 cm, I think that's 5'9. Looking back, have had celiac disease symptoms all my life. My sister is exactly the same height, and both my brother and father are tall people. But I was always the very slim one, even though I ate HUGE amounts of food all day long.

I'm 5'11, so is my dad! My mom is 5'8. My mom's side of the family are 5'8 or taller.

Body dysmorphia experience. When I was at the worst of my gluten problem I use to get chronic constipation; I would spend long time sitting on the toilet. One day as I was tired of sitting, I rested my head on my hands and my elbows on my knees, as soon as I felt the pressure of my elbows on my knees the perception of my body changed to that of a tarantula; I visualized and it felt real. The perception went away as soon as I removed the pressure on my knees, I deducted that the pressure of my elbows on the knees caused the sensation, so I repeated the position and the sensation of having the body of a tarantula happened each time. I have not had that experience since then because I started a gluten-free diet short after. I wonder if those people that look distorted to themselves in the mirror could have something similar but with the responsible sensory contacts located on their feet. I want to document this experience because it might help some research or others, it sounds crazy but I feel the right thing to do is to share it.

Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes
