Can I Touch Gluten Containing Ingredients While Baking For Others?

I'm new at this gluten-intolerant lifestyle. After bingeing on foods containing gluten prior to my medical tests (no results yet) I've been back on a gluten-free diet for 10 days now. One thing I've noticed during the two extended periods of time I've been gluten-free is that I actually have a neck -- or more accurately, one that isn't puffy and undefined looking. I decided to make regular muffins for my husband, being extremely careful not to touch my mouth while my hands were handing the flour and batter. Despite my extreme care not to ingest the slightest bit of gluten, my neck (within a matter of minutes) was puffy again.

Does this mean I can't even touch foods containing gluten without reacting? Is this possible, or even common among those who are gluten-intolerant?

As poofy as flour is, I think it would be pretty hard not to get some in your mouth while baking.

Yes, flour gets everywhere! I won't allow flour in my kitchen when family visit. I feed the kids Eggo waffles instead of allowing a box of Bisquik into the house.

I would never bake with wheat flour.. One time I made my gluten-free tortilla in one end of the room and they made with gluten on the other side. I got sick..

I have not alowed wheat flour to come into my house because I am so sensitiv.

When I went totally gluten free I told dh he had to make his own lunch because I was not touching his bread.

Yep. No flour allowed in my house. All baking and cooking is done with gluten free flour only.

Flour is insidious. It floats around and gets into everything and is really hard to clean up 100%.

Also, people can get sick just from breathing it in. Some people on this site get sick from construction work when plaster or drywall contains flour.

You definitely should not be baking with gluten flour or be in the same room when someone is baking with it. Ideally you should ban it from the house altogether.

After having given it some thought, I decided that even if I could shower immediately after, I would not do any work whatsoever with wheat flour.

I've cooked with non-gluten free items and just washed my hands vigorously afterwards, it was just the easy stuff though...pillsbury biscuits or pizza dough, that kind of stuff. I don't think I'd bring flour into the house.

No wheat flour in our house either. I occasionally buy pre-made things but I won't bake with it.

At least gluten free muffins are one of the easiest things to master. B)

Every time he eats gluten, he can cross contaminate you with a kiss unless he cleans his mouth out afterwards. Just sayin' ..... :o

      Hello everyone. I am Elena and am 38 years old. I suspect I have a gluten intolerance even if my celiac panel is ok. I have the following symptoms : facial flushing, Red dots not bumps în face, bloating abdominal distension, hair loss, depression anxiety even with meds and even bipolar. Fatigue extreme to the point of not being able to work. All of these after I eat gluten. Could I have non celiac gluten sensitivity? Thanks anyone else with these symptoms?

      Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

      I'm sure it's chemically perfect. Most of them taste lousy!

      Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !
