Canned Cream Of Whatever Soups

Campbell's cream of mushroom or whatever soups have been a staple for casseroles in my kitchen. Not any more, as they contain wheat. Heck. So, any suggestions for something similar that is gluten free? :blink:

The Progresso Creamy Mushroom soup is gluten free. It says so right on the back of the can. It is thinner than the campbells, so you don't dilute it in your recipes, but once you get used to it, it works good. Progresso has a few gluten free soups. CHeck out there website. If it is gluten free, it will always say so on the back of the can. They don't have a creamy chikcen though.

I make my own cream of chicken soup. I use the HerbOx bullion cubes which are gluten free and water, than thicken it with cornstarch and add milk. Sometimes I grind up cooked chicken to add to it too. It works good.

The only thing I've been able to find is Health Valley Organic Cream of Mushroom. I find this at Whole Foods. I have not had any luck finding others that I see posted in this forum. There is one that I am searching for right now. It is Progresso Vegetable Classics French Onion. I used to make a quick jambalaya with the beef broth and Campbell's French Onion Soup. Well, I guess I'll just keep searching....

BTW, the link that was posted went to the General Mills site. I also found a recipe for Peppermint Patty Brownies that I need to make. Just need an occasion!

Excellent idea, Skylark! Although I have a very long work day tomorrow, so I'll have to wait til later in the week to bake. Anticipation is a fine sauce!

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat.
