Hey guys, this is a little embarrasing, but I need help. I need to know if Yasmin birth control is gluten free or not. It's relativley new, and I can't find it on any lists.( I've checked glutenfreedrugs.com and several others) I've taken it for at least two years, but my diagnosis was in April and I'm still checking on all my logistics. If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I would just contact the manufacturer.

Carriefaith Enthusiast

I found this:

The inactive ingredients are lactose monohydrate NF, corn starch NF, modified starch NF, povidone 25000 USP, magnesium stearate NF, hydroxylpropylmethyl cellulose USP, macrogol 6000 NF, talc USP, titanium dioxide USP, ferric oxide pigment, yellow NF. The inert film coated tablets contain lactose monohydrate NF, corn starch NF, povidone 25000 USP, magnesium stearate NF, hydroxylpropylmethyl cellulose USP, talc USP, titanium dioxide USP.

They have "modified starch" which could be wheat, I would call the company to confirm the source of the starch.

Ahhh man...I sure hope Yasmin is gluten-free b/c i've had some issues w/ some other pills and Yasmin has worked great for me. I'll be so disappointed if it's got gluten in it....if someone contacts the manufactor before I do PLEASE post or e-mail me. And I'll do the same. Thanks!

I take them as well and I haven't had any problems with them. They've been the best pills I've taken so far.

Just an FYI, a friend of mine was taking Yasmin and developed an extreme sensitivity to Ibuprofen while taking it. After ending up in the emergency room for an anaphylactic reaction, she read the insert with Yasmin and it said something about not taking certain NSAIDS while using it. I'm not sure exactly why, but one Dr. told her that it was common for Yasmin users to become "allergic" to certain OTC drugs.

Just ask the prescribing Dr. for more info and call the manufacturer as well ok? :)

I would ask your pharmasist to read up on it. Most have the phone numbers, ect. of the manufacturers and---the nice ones will call them for you.

I am on Alesse 21, which is gluten free, and have not had any problems with it.

I've been on Yasmin since I've been diagnosed, for about 2 years and have never had a problem...my doctor was aware of my diagnosis when she perscribed it as well... :D

I was wondering the same thing since Im just starting on Yasmin. I actually called the manufacturer just yesterday, and they said that it is safe , gluten-free. Hope that helps.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
