Going To Be The Beach - What Food Would You Pack

DH and I are taking the kids to the boardwalk tomorrow afternoon. (Unless, of course, my body decides to have D tomorrow. :rolleyes: )

We will be just walking the boardwalk, taking them on rides, playing games. This will be our first outing since my dietary restrictions.

NO:

fried foods

gluten

dairy

I'm pretty sure there will be nothing available to nourish myself with. What should I pack? I can put things like nuts, seeds, Larabars, etc in my bag and I can also pack a cooler to leave in the car until dinner time.

ETA: Guess I can't edit the title. Hahahah. I meant "Going to the beach." lol

Sub sandwich made with Against the Grain baguettes--your favorite using subways menu as a recipe--these are filling and will satisfy your hunger. Put lettuce in a bag and a little dressing in a Tupperware container to add right before eating. Can also be made on regular gluten free bread.

Some cleaned cut up fresh veggies for munching

Chips or popcorn for the salt you will crave at the beach

Some hard candy for the sweet tooth

Bottles of water

A good book you've been meaning to read and your camera to record this enjoyable time

Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses

A few wet washcloths in a Ziploc bag

a sub sandwich sounds yummy. But I just looked up the bread and it contains milk and mozzarella. :(

I think pack a cooler is a good idea. Whatever you pack, pack everyone dinner. If you have a sandwich on your bread, make the same for the rest on their bread or yours. If you are eating basically the same things, you won't feel so left out with them having fries, grease burgers, etc.

I went skiing shortly after going gluten-free. I packed my food everyday and really enjoyed it but it wasn't quite the same as the stuff everyone else got. I felt a bit sad and left out.

If you can't find gluten free bread to make a sandwich, you have several options:

1. Use rice cakes---not exactly the same texture as bread, but two rice cakes will hold sandwich filling or even a hamburger just fine, I even make peanut butter and jelly rice cakes sometimes to take with me because they don't have to be kept as cold.

2. Use corn or rice tortillas to wrap up meat and veggies. You will have to heat the corn tortillas first or they will fall apart. I've never found rice tortillas, but I have read some people here use them.

3. Use a rice paper wrapper to make spring rolls. You can get these at any Asian food store. Cold spring rolls stuffed with whatever meat or veggies you like are a great portable snack. I like to get the pre-shredded cabbage and carrot mix that is made for coleslaw, marinate it in whatever dressing you like and fill the rolls with half coleslaw, half bean thread noodles or rice noodles. Take some dipping sauce or dressing with you to dip these in.

Sandwiches on Udi's bread. I make them ahead of time for the beach and they keep well in the cooler. With fruit and chips.

I take Enjoy Life Trail Mix and Lara Bars everywhere--they don't need to be kept cool. Stax chips are good also since they come in the tube--the plain ones are dairy free. Fresh fruit, cut up bagged veggies. Bottled water, of course.

I have my sister from Canada visiting here in north Dallas and one of the days we planned to have lunch in a tiny, girly tearoom. I called in advance and asked if I could bring in my own bun for their ham and swiss sandwich. They told me the brand of meat and cheese and both were gluten-free. I presliced the bun and wrapped in and put it into a baggie with a fork and knife for them to use to pick up the meat and to cut it in half. Instead of their pasta salad I asked for a double portion of fruit. I used a Katz gluten free large challah bun and it was delicious. I used my own gluten-free mustard and mayo before I put it into the baggie.

Lunch was delicious and I did not get ill. I think it does take some effort to preplan what you are going to eat but if you call ahead and make some decisions, and try not to make a big deal of it, everything should go fine. I find the Katz gluten free challah is so delicious and I can make a deli sandwich and take it to work and no one questions what I am eating.

We had a great night. I'm glad I had my double stroller with me to carry the cooler bag I brought. :lol: It ended up being pretty heavy.

I didn't get out to get any gluten-free bread. Instead, I made some chicken salad (chicken, celery, red onion, mayo, s&p) and then baked a batch of Rosemary Crackers to spoon it onto. (recipe for crackers from Elena's Pantry.) It was delicious together!

I also brought watermelon for myself, and some for DH and the kids, a small bowl of cherry tomatoes (yum!), rice cakes, and a Larabar.

I ended up not touching the rice cakes or Larabar. I was plenty satisfied with the rest.

Glad you had a good day! I tend to overpack when packing food for days like that as well. Better to have too much you can eat than not enough. A cooler with wheels comes in handy if you ever find yourself without the stroller.

BTW, everytime I see the title of this thread I picture someone doing yoga or something on the beach say "I will be the beach, the beach and I are one" B) or something zen like that. :lol: Just the way my funny brain works I guess. Just wanted to let you know the typo makes me smile. :D

      Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

      Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

      Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

      It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
