Gluten Withdrawal! Wow... Worse Than Being On Gluten!

Gluten-Free for 5 days - Daughter is nauseous, thrown up a few times, can't keep anything down, still stomach pains... is this unusual? No diarrhea in 4 days, but no BM either. It seemed like a couple of days ago, she was really back to her old self, and now... BAM!! Is this withdrawal. If eating mostly gluten type foods for most of her 22 years, would this explain it?

Help... she wants to go back to the hospital, feels like everyone will think she is crazy!!

No I don't think that is withdrawal. What is she eating? If she is eating a lot of gluten -free substitutes, she could be sensitive to something else in them she doesn't typically eat. But also, gluten free breads and baked goods don't have as much fiber so the reaction could be C. That could explain the nausea, stomach pains and vomiting. Get her some laxatives (make sure they are gluten free) and call her doctor if they don't work soon.

I don't think this is withdrawal. I think the poor thing is just still really sick from that gluten challenge. I assume she had a full medical workup and found nothing definitive. If anything the gluten-free has probably calmed the diarrhea. Five days gluten-free is not necessarily long enough for someone as severly sick as your daughter sounds to get a lot better.

If she's barely eating and not keeping much down, would you really expect a BM? What were they giving her in the hospital that helped her feel better? Were there any meds she can get a prescription for? If she is getting really dehydrated again it would make sense to take her back to the hospital for IV fluids. That may have been part of what perked her up while she was in. Sometimes sucking on a little crushed ice can get water down without making nausea too bad.

Have you deglutened the house and are you taking precautions when you make her food? Make sure that the utensils you are using, like nonstick pans, cutting boards etc. have not been used for gluten foods. I know you said there are a lot of foods she doesn't like, what is she eating? Fresh foods are going to be best. Don't get her any of the prepared precooked chicken from the deli. Get fresh and cook it yourself. She shouldn't do any dairy right now. You mentioned in another post that there was a 'shake' she likes and would drink. If you have been giving it to her I would stop for now. Fresh and unprocessed is the way she needs to go.

Also make really, really sure that any meds the is taking are gluten free. Don't trust the doctors to know call the companies yourself. If she is on any, either script or OTC and you have trouble finding contact numbers post them here and we will help get you the info.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding

I think I found a huge culprit for severe reactions to create worsening of my c symptoms. Do people with celiac have sensitivity and /or have opposite reaction to certain medications Where can I find a list ?  I'm new here I'm.wondering why I am getting worse when I take certain medicine...the burning feet.  Rebound muscle pain so intense  How many people get opposite effects or have a horrible attack after these meds

Does anyone know if that includes scrambled eggs and healthy smart butter (,gluten free) I add a very tiny amount of margarine less than a teaspoon.  I did no't have any bread    It just seems like no matter what I eat my stomach and nerves over fire and here comes a host of horrible symptoms. My lower abdomen feels horrible, my right leg thigh muscle.. very odd. Jaw pain. Burning feet , joint pain , you name it  The anxiety just creeps up into brain fog. I don't think I could explain this to anyone who is unfamiliar.  Also,  I most likely will not remember posting this until I check it.  This is highly unusual for me because I have an excellent memory.  One weekend before I knew anything about celiac I lost an entire weekend from severe brain fog, confusion, pain, etc.  I honestly thought I was losing my mind. When I think back I recall eating a lot of PBJ sandwiches and turkey sandwiches.  Once again did not know about gluten.  I was just too sick to cook. Do people fast during attacks ?? It seems horrible to keep going through this. I hope I'm not causing my own problems... I wonder if I should fast because I'm not eating gluten .  Chicken ,  scrambled eggs no milk , canned carrots,  gluten free low sugar low fat Greek yogurt which I already posted about 😞 Any suggestions I am open... I am bedridden when this happens to me.  Thank you Celiac community. 🙏🏻❤️

Yeah, that sounds super familiar. When inflammation levels are high — especially at the start of changing your diet — the body often develops a fructose and lactose intolerance. Unfortunately, the only thing that really helps is cutting out anything that isn’t lactose-free or that contains sugar. So basically, stick to meat, veggies, fish…
