Nut Allergy: Would You Eat Seeds That "may Contain Other Organic Pieces.."

Hi everyone,

If you were allergic to nuts, especially peanuts, would you consume a product that is made in a peanut free facility but "is packaged in a facility that also packages tree nuts"?

Peanuts are my worst allergy, and I'm not sure if I'm allergic to other nuts in the same way.

I just bought Klein Family Farms Arroyo Seco raw sunflower kernels. Their packaging says "Packaged in a facility that also packages tree nuts. This bad may contain other organic pieces. Peanut Free Facility."

The company is Klein Bros. and is based out of Stockton, CA.

If you had a nut allergy, would you feel comfortable eating a product like this? It does not note the the packaging equipment is shared. That is unclear. It must be though, if they note that there could be other organic pieces in the bag?

Is it a requirement for manufacturers to wash the packaging equipment between each product? Could there also be dust from nuts?

I'd call the company, but it's Sunday today and there's no number listed on the bag.

I wonder if it'd be helpful to wash the seeds?

I would just love any input anyone has. Thank you.

Peanuts are a legume not a true nut. However if you have multiple allergies and your reactions are severe you may want to get tested for tree nuts at some point if you are not sure whether you are actually allergic to them. I really can't advise on whether to risk it or not though.

While “nut” is in their name, peanuts are in fact legumes. Peanuts actually grow underground, as opposed to nuts like walnuts, almonds, etc. that grow on trees (and are sometimes referred to as "tree nuts").

I have three nephews that are severely allergic to peanuts, they are anaphylaptic and have to carry epipens. Not sure how severe your peanut allergy is. If you're not comfortable, I would just not eat those. Also you can get tested for tree nut allergies. I can't remember if my nephews can eat tree nuts, I'll have to ask. I thought they were avoiding nuts and tree nuts all together.

My son has tested pos. to both tree nuts and peanuts in the past. No "known" reactions. He just avoids eating them. The allergist said he should avoid tree nuts that are cooked in peanut oil but can start trying tree nuts, very slowly again after not consuming them for two years. He's up for re-testing in a couple months so we'll see if his tree nuts are still pos. For now, he gets to re-introduce one kind of nut every two months and one serving only once or twice a week. If there are no apparent reactions we can proceed with the same schedule until re-testing time. Last time he was tested, he reacted to peanuts, second time so peanuts are still out. I don't know how helpful that is other than to say ones approach can vary. We do have an epi-pen just because of the nature of a couple of his allergies but he's never had a reaction and his testing didn't indicate that he would, but due to the nature of the particular allergens..just in case.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
