Back From The Wedding

I made it back from the wedding and was able to do the trip and only end up exhausted but not glutened. It was a wonderful event and nicely done and I took my own advice and some hints from others and basically brought my kitchen with me. Although the facility said they could make me a gluten free dinner at the reception I realized that the turkey was the same as everyone was getting and I just didn't want to take a chance so I ate a cup of fresh fruit instead and then opened a can of beef stew when I got back to the hotel. Was it a pain to bring a pan, silverware, dishes and food with me traveling, yes but it was worth it not to get sick. My poor old body can't take so many hours driving but thankfully I didn't have to deal with any gluten symptoms.

I did discover that my exhusbands family does have other diagnosed celiacs. Not a real big surprise since he himself is. I am still worried about my DD. I wish she would get back on the diet as she was a beautiful bride but so very thin but I can't push her about it. We all know what happens when a Mom pushes.

Anyway I wanted to let everyone know that as much as I feared the trip the preplanning food wise was definately the way to go. Next time I visit I will take 2 days to do drive there though. Nothing like a 7 or so hour drive to remind one that yes they do have arthritis.

Well thank heavens, 'cause you give some pretty good advice!

I'm glad it went well for you. It really is about the event and not the food, isn't it?

So glad you made it without being glutened!!

It sure is. I didn't even get any weird looks at the dinner the night before when all I ate was the salad. I hadn't even ordered one as I assumed it would have croutons but when I saw it didn't I was going to order but ended up with 2 nonsalad eating folks donating theirs. I was afraid I would be selfconsious about not eating but that didn't turn out to be the case at all. Happy socializing is definately possible even in our 'foodie' society after all. :)

Glad it went so well and congratulations to your daughter! :)

I think sometimes people will ask why someone isn't eating out of curiosity but for the most part people are so self absorbed they forget it about it pretty quickly! lol

I rarely eat at weddings anyway, because I am a really picky eater and thus rarely like the food. (Didn't even really eat the food at my wedding, in part because I busy talkin to all my friends and family. It was a small luncheon. Thank Goodness! Not a big people person meself) Or they have a million desserts. All chocolate... GRRR So my wedding problems aren't too much a problem. I do what I always do. People really don't care as much as it would seem!

But I am so glad your wedding turned out so well! And congratulations to your daughter.

Congratulations to you and your daughter!

Love the post saying it's about the event, not the food. I was just saying that to my

grandmother regarding Thanksgiving! :D

Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
