Need Some Info On Existing Symptoms After Going Gluten Free

Hi.. About a month ago I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance and since then have gone on a strict gluten free diet. I have some existing symptoms which have lessened to a certain extent but still there. I've noticed that after eating certain types of foods (I'm guessing dairy) I can feel my heart pounding. It's not rapid, just normal beats but I can feel it pounding and it lasts for anywhere between few minutes to an hour or so and seems to happen intermittently. I do get some anxiety too sometimes. My doctor also told me that my thyroid is on the low side and so is my ferritin (but still in normal ranges). I was wondering if low thyroid/ferritin can cause pounding heart beats and anxiety? My doctor said I don't need any supplements and he expects everything to become normal in a few months after going gluten free. Therefore, I was wondering has anyone here have had such symptoms and have got them resolved? Or are these symptoms caused by another food? I was negative for Soy, Milk, Egg and Corn allergies. The only supplement I'm taking is Vitamin D3 1,000 IU on alternate days.

i dont know exactly what kind of tests you had- but keep in mind that Allergies are different from Intolerances. you may be allergic to milk & corn- but your intestines may be intolerant and unable to digest them.

i have had palpitations off & on over the last decade- they went away when i went gluten free. but ive had a few in the past week. the day i had my "last gluten meal" (june 30, 2010)- i actually ended up on the couch with tachycardia- my heart rate went up to about 160.. i layed down with ice for a while talking myself down from vomiting.

i think gluten can absolutely cause palpitations. but also thyroid disorders can... you should your thyroid checked by the doc- as it is common to have thyroid problems with gluten intolerance

Thanks for your reply and hope you feel better! I don't really have rapid heart beats just pounding! I think my heart rate is normal but just can hear by heart beat throughout my body for sometime. From what I can make out, thyroid and low iron can cause this to happen and probably anxiety caused by foods. My doctors checked my thyroid too and everything was normal except it was a little on the normal low range. Maybe I'm just still having gluten symptoms?? Who knows!! I've been on gluten free diet for about a month or so now and have felt better but maybe I just need few more months for some of my symptoms to disappear!! gluten intolerance is so mystifying!!

I have had this symptom to a greater or lesser (currently lesser) exent for over 20 years. It does depend on what I eat and it is not necessarily related to gluten since I don't eat gluten anymore and as far as I know am not susceptible to small amounts of cc. It is sometimes accompanied by tachycardia, sometimes not (especially not now when I am on a higher dose of Lopressor :) ) It is definitely a digestive problem, but post-gluten it has been hard to pin down. At least it does not bother me like it did before :D That is why I have quit trying to track it down at this point - mostly it seems to be when I haven't eaten enough (maybe skipped a meal because I am caught out without food) or haven't eaten a balanced meal :o

My thyroid hormone T3/T4 also jumps between "low normal" and out-of-range low. I can tell you when my thyroid was at its worse, my heart would flutter often and I would go through periods of it beating really fast. However, in tandum with this, I was eating eggs like they were going out of style and I found via bloodwork that I'm highly allergic. So, maybe it was a little of both. However, my thyroid is showing improvement and I stopped eating eggs and all is well.

I would HIGHLY suggest that you take a multi (I take a raw one from Garden of Life), calcium and magnesium (if you don't eat dairy like me), a probiotic (my GI says the accidolphilus from Trader Joes at $3.99 is as good as any others - I do use another brand myself) and Omega 3. For anyone with autoimmune disorders, this is the basic package, or so my doctors say. If you were to come to my house and see all of the other supplements my doctor currently has me on, you would wonder if I have time for anything else except taking pills and stirring powders. All in the name of health, right :P

Well I'll be darned. I've had this feeling with my heart feeling like it's trying to pound it's way out of my chest - yeah, not faster, just almost like it felt like it beat HARDER, in a way. I used to get it periodically, and honestly, I hadn't even realized until just now that it's gone! :blink:

Ha, learn something about this disease every day!

But re: the existing symptoms, I would say that you could give it a little time, and if that doesn't take care of it, you might do some research and try to get off even MORE gluten than you are now - gluten free foods typically have SOME gluten, just really low levels. For some of us, we may be getting more than we should from our gluten free foods, and so not fully heal.

Or, you could look at other allergies/intolerances that might be affecting you.

If it could be gluten that's getting your heart, I know for me, it was often after anything with grains, beans, or nuts - these have been the most contaminated when I've checked them out.

      Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

      @pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too.       Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
