Where did the Patty come from?

How was it cooked?

Becci Enthusiast

I listed the brand name a second ago, it was from Walmart.. And my husband cooked it.. We have a gluten-free household, so no 'known' gluten here...

Hi and sorry you are feeling bad....I hate this! Maybe it was the cream in the cream corn or the corn itself. I'm starting to notice issue when I eat corn....bloating and glutened type stuff......just a thought.

I recently got CC'ed from meat at Sam's Club....I don't know about Walmart though :(

Is it for sure this meal? I usually don't get symptoms until 4-6 hours later...so usually it's not what I just ate, but the meal before....

I'd say CC could be likely - none of these are on the low end of gluten free, I don't believe. And as another sensitive celiac buddy? Any of those three would likely get me. :(

If, however, I was going to pick the most likely - just looking at food, not brands - I'd take a look at the beans and corn. Beans and grains tend to be grown in the same fields and are very often exposed to the same equipment, so there is a higher risk of CC for them. Corn is often a rotation crop for wheat, specifically, so there is an even higher risk of CC from them. I got sick so often on corn that I thought it WAS the corn that was getting me, but more and more it's looking like CC to it.

So sorry you're feeling sick, though - I'm in the same spot from last night, so just...a big virtual hug for your pain. :)

Yea I get delayed reactions also. Sometimes the offending food is even a couple of days back which can make it really hard to figure out. A food diary can be helpful in figuring out delayed reactions.

Walmart and Sams Club use the same suppliers (all owned by Sam Walton) I have been told that processed patties are a no no. I hope you feel better soon.

I too got glutened last night. I made Jell-O Choc. pudding (Lactaid milk)and cool whip. Does anyone know if that could be the culpret???

I actually start feeling gluten in 1-3 hours... 4 Max.. And since I haven't been able to eat to start with, I only ate dinner yesterday... So it WAS from dinner.. But my worst doesn't usually start until day 3.. :(

As for the beans and corn being CC'ed from the field they were grown in, I thought about the corn, but not about the beans...

I think I will start keeping a food diary.. It would be worth it to know... Agh. :(

And as for the hug, AWWW!!! Big hugs to you too..

And to ArubaWendy for her glutening.. :( So sorry hun.

So do I react fast?

I can usually know within 40 minutes if I've been glutened..... At most an hour or two?

And I'm like SUPER sensitive as well

Hi. I didn't see anyone else mention this, so I joined the site so I could:

It quite possibly was the angus burger. Many of the angus burger packages I've read have flavorings, some gluten, in them. The high-end burgers have flavorings while the low-end are just meat, in my experience. Out of all the GV burgers I've tried my family likes the 85-15 patties the best. I use them as a "fast" food for times I don't feel like cooking.

Anyhow, the other stuff may have contributed, but my first thought when reading your list was the beef because I'd almost bought angus burgers once and for some reason read the back of the package and put them back. Then whenever I saw angus burgers I'd read the packages, and again put them back.

100% beef or chicken or whatever meat on the label unfortunately doesn't mean there aren't flavorings and additives, just that they don't have fillers in them.

Good luck to you! :)

So we need to add no beans or corn to our list of no no foods? If corn is an issue then what about corn tortillas, and gluten free products that have corn in them.. Geesh,,,, I wish this gluten free process was as simple as having it easily listed on the ingredients list.. Cc adds so much more stress.

The vast majority of people with celiac disease can eat corn without problems. There are some of us who, in addition to celiac disease, are intolerant to corn. Cross contamination is possible in anything.

In the early stages of recovery, you will have reactions to many gluten-free foods. It does not mean that you have a problem with those foods--it just means that your damaged intestines are still having trouble with food in general.

I thought of the patty too. Sometimes I have trouble tolerating foods with a high grease content. Fireside gourmet patties are like 30% fat right? What flavor was it? Was it the pure beef patty or did it have onion or some other flavor?

I've had Bush's beans and they seem to be ok.

Are you having trouble with corn in general? I cut corn out of my diet 5 days ago. I kept noticing symptoms (swelling & D) after eating corn. I feel soooo much better with it gone! I really feel like I'm on the road to recovery now.

I hope you feel better soon. I'm so sorry for you.

Becci,

Sorry to hear of your discomfort. My guess is the Great Value brand cream corn from Walmart. I have found a long "processed with" label warning that includes wheat on many of their products. Double check the can again. Good luck and feel better.

I'm here because I googled those burgers + gluten.  Had them for dinner last night, and "got glutened" just like you.  They list "natural flavoring" under ingredients--I'm guessing that means malt, i.e. barley.  Anyway, they're off my menu.  Sorry they got you too.

@catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten. This explains it well: Lectins, agglutinins, and their roles in autoimmune reactivities https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25599185/

I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.
    • catnapt
I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks
