No Results From The Diet

My daughter (8 years old) is on a diet for 1,5 year. When she got her diagnosis she had TTGM 145,5, IgA EMA positive. After 5 months she got TTGM 21,8. After 1 year she got TTGM 9,7, IgA EMA positive.

When she started the diet (at age 7) she had 17,5 kg and 110 cm. After 1,5 year she has 20,2 kg and 119 cm. In past 6 months she did not gain any weight. I do not have the latest blood results yet.

I think the diet is not giving the best results on her weight and height. Her blood results confirms that we strictly stick to diet. What is not working? The doctor will now test her thyroid activity.

Which test should be done to?

A "diet" is much more than whether one simply consumes or doesn't consume gluten based products. Are you sure the child is getting the appropriate amount of all nutrients?

Have you seen any signs that she may be getting cross contaminated anywhere? Craft supplies, snacks at school, sharing condiments at home etc? Does she have any issues with dairy or soy? If she is having some issues in addition to the lack of weight gain and growth it might be helpful to eliminate soy and casien for a bit or to keep a food diary to see if you can pinpoint if there might be an additional intolerance. Unfortunately that can happen and at times the cointolerances are not apparent until we have been off gluten for a while.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
